Greedy Oscar.

I was feeding my Oscars Hikari Gold during the day and fresh prawns and peas at night and they no longer want the prawns so it can work the other way too. I have moved on to Crickets and meal worms instead of the prawns but they still can't get enough of the pellets!

Never thought that I could have a problem getting them to eat normal food. Hum maybe I should not feed them treats? Any one confirm feeding shirp or other treats effected their fish eating normal food?
my O got fed ciclid sticks as a baby, but eventually, afters giving him mealworms, he stopped eating those.
He never eats pellets anymore, just all sorts of worms, bugs and other insects.
But live food is very cheap and easy to get , so i don't complain.
I gutload the mealworms with Hikari gold pellets and then feed those to my O.:D

 My Oscars would eat small children if they thought they could get their mouth around one. I would cut chunks of raw shrimp if you though it looked like he was having troubble getting it down.

They will definitely show a preference for treats if you feed them too often. Mine went through a phase where he would not eat pellets, but it only lasted a few days. You just gotta show em who's boss and not give in to their begging for food. Just use pellets as a staple, and mix in a treat food maybe 2 or 3 times a week and you should be fine.

mine showed this symptom and is already for 2weeks and is still rejecting my pellets...
looks like he is da boss...-.-

At risk of sounding like a massive noob, how do you gutload worms/crickets etc?

So if I put my Hikari gold in with my crickets and meal worms they will eat it?

I will definitely be trying this!

I have never heard or seen a greedy Oscar before....uh...I feed my jags krill a couple times a week....the male does not seem as interested in the pellets once those go into the tank again but he eats a few. Once I feed them pellets another time or 2 he'll start eating them again. Though they never go after the pellets like they hit the krill. I feed them bloodworms for a treat once in a while. My Dovii eat pellets, krill, raw market shrimp, brine shrimp and bloodworms like there's no tomorrow. If I were you and you want to keep a varied diet just watch for them getting picky and just stick to the pellets more often.

Oscars have huge throats with long rows of actual teeth in them, big strong teeth set on muscles. They can crush just about anything short of concrete (an exaggeration). He's not going to come anywhere near choking on something. It's a straight shot from his mouth to his stomach. But like someone said-you don't have to cook the shrimp, just feed it raw.

yes, just crush the pellets up a bit.
I put 2 days of worms in a seperate box with the pellets and they'll eat most of them, before i feed them to my fish.
