They're great fish - kind of like a larger green and gold rainbow cichlid.

I find that demand for them ebbs and flows. I've liked them since the mid-80's so when I saw that Rapps had some wild ones from Lake Nicaragua I couldn't resist.

I sold the last couple of F1 pairs that I had recently. Might need to let them make more soon :)

Matt

well it seems like it flows whenever somebody posts up pics of some great looking fliers!

woah orange fliers!! that's sick. I love these fish. Before these guys I had a black piranha, and it was cool, but these guys are so much more interesting. They've got tons of personality, they're just stunning to look at, and they make babies at least once a month if the fry are taken out of the tank. I couldn't be more pleased.

I even named them...Heloise and Abelard. Yes, I am that kind of geek. =)
What do you do with all those babies!

trade em to the LFS, I'm raising a few grow outs now. I was hoping they would pair off. Last couple of times they've bred the grow outs have eaten the eggs. The fliers are GREAT parents but they won't hurt they're own fry, so the growouts have a big dinner.

Here's Dad winning 1st place in the "Cichlasoma over 6" " class at Aquafest a couple of months ago...Picture is by Mike Hill.

He's a wild fish from Lake Nicaragua.

He's about 67 degrees in a bare show tank... so not happy... but you get the idea...

Matt
I saw him at aquafest and was blown away.

lol I saw pic's of your's on cca in spet and got a in touch with Matt. My female has been ready to breed since day one but the male is only interested in food. He's in almost every pic of my tank thinking he'll get food if he swims in front of me. Thanks to diogenes for introducing me to the fish and DOW for getting me a pair.

my male was like that at first too. I moved the temp up to 80F, and started doing daily 50% PWC, and feeding bloodworms every couple of days. They were breeding like rabbits in no time.

i want some australheros. Are they plant friendly?

Breeder I got mine from had plants with his. Mine are fake.

I believe they use plants to "hang" the wigglers on he said??

Mine dont with the fakes.

Give Toddnbecka a shout. They should still have some babies.

My fish from Rapps I got las January. She is only about 3.5". Will only eat flake food.

She breeds with my female HRP constantly. They do make a handsome couple though.

Hi Bill
Yes, a very interesting trait of this species is to 'hang' newly hatched fry from wood or plants. They sort of string em together.
Heres some pics that belong to a fellow fishkeeper here in the UK, of his Centrarchus fry.
