green iguana diet?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
She died back in 2004 at 10 years old. That picture was taken about 2 months before... We were moving, in between houses for a couple months so I had to keep her in a smaller cage and she got digestion problems. I had her at the vet for a day or two, then I left her with them when I went out of town for a couple days and when I got back she was dead.

I figured she died from the stress of moving and being at the vet, but she was 10.

What's the experience here with max age on pet iguanas?

my male is 6 years old right now, going on 7 and he's still goin as if he was a hatchling lol
he was my first so i don't know anything more than that for age... i've heard from 10 to 20 tho...

The longest living pet iguana was "Iggy" of California wich lived to be 29 years old, and its not a odd one since I have previous records of green igs living well into their twentys. This shows us that we still alot of work to do in inproving our igs diet and life style as many igs are dying in wich should be their prime (as a side note however green igs in most of their home lands would hardly get to be 10 years old, this is the captivity status). I for the most part beleave that crusial keys in said longevity is a loving home with lots of enrichment, a very diverse fresh greens diet and regular exposure to sun ligth.
As for dxdx, your ig was really pretty:) love her color, and we dont often get ones like yours that often this days (she was a south american ig, as oposed to most of ours these days wich are from El Salvador). However dont come out and say "look I did this, you can do to", because alot of people that tryed to do just the same failed completly. Hell I herd of BABY igs dying in just a few days because they were alergic to weat or because of protein present in comercial ig foods! Romain letuce is the best letuce but its still a water based product and higly unbalanced in phosphorus, as it is banana so they are only suitable as treats. And I would never colect hibiscus flowers or leafs in a public place to offer my igs because I would fear they would be contaminated with pesticides wich is often the case.
You simply got lucky, lucky that the minerals present in the ig food balanced the phosphorus present in the other items, that your ig was not alergic to weat and that the hibiscus parts were free of pesticides or to low of a dose to cause any efect, thats the same of me saying: "my granfather smoked 2 packs of cigarretes a day and lived untill he was 90, cigar smoke is good for you" wich obviously it inst.

Whats natural about Collards/Mustard Greens/Bok Choi/Romaine/etc? Central/South Iguanas weren't designed to eat North American produce?.......It's all about nutritional content......Ask your buddy Tom Crutchfield about how well these pelleted diets work......He uses Mazuri Tortoise food like many other Iguana keepers.......Mark Malfatti too ( He uses the Zoomed Pellets )......The Supermarket diet will work, but there is too much guesswork and nutritional holes involved for me......

When I was taking in Rescue Iguanas, Mazuri would take an emaciated, half dead Iguana, and make it relatively decent looking in two weeks. The produce diet would literally take 6-8 weeks, if not longer........

when i got my big igg he was in rough shape. he could barely claimb he was so weak. he was a fed a straight diet of leafy greens and he came back fast. theres just nothing natural about feeding pellets. they are all just filled with fillers. i dont care about numbers. i go to the produce department and i just stock up and i feed from what i buy through out the course of the week. it might not be the same they would get in the wild but its a whole lot closer than a bowl full of pellets.

I though you would never picks of that guy, cant get tyerd of looking at him:D Now if he was already full size when you got him, I would say he is more on the 14 year old range. Dont forget to keep him very well hidrated, thats a main key in making him get into its twentys;)

hes prob around 5 feet or so. ive never taken a measuremnt of him.

he great. puppy dog tame. wish i had the room so i could keep him with me in my apartment

so where do you keep him then? I had to sell my male cuz he had a huge ass attitude problem and i had a baby on the way... didn't want something happening to either him or the baby

Right now he stays with my parents and my little bro and dad take care of him.

If all goes well with my job I am looking at buying a house in a year or so and I will be able to take him back with me. Its killing me to not have him at my apartment but with my rhino igg and my monitors I have no extra room for him. And the GF and the landlord weren't to keen on having him free roam lol
