Green N Nasty

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yellow/brown is usually a result of tannings, but in no way is it a bad thing. Green water, you got to stop the amount of light getting to the tank.

I was thinking about getting some different light bulbs because I think mine are too bright (2 x 95w regular bulbs + 2 x black lights), any suggestions on lights.

sounds like both a water born alge bloom & leaching tannin. is this tank near a window? sorry if i didn't see this in the posts, what size is the tank? also in my 20yrs of fish keeping i've NEVER had water born alge bloom. this is y i ask about being in direct sunlight. as for the tannin's you should be good after awile of water changes. did you presoak the wood before adding to tank? i once didn't do this, and caused my tank to be as dark as tea and was hard to see in tank. this lasted for few months, but eventually disappeared.

In cases like this, it is normally sunlight getting to the tank that causes the problem, not the aquarium lights

My driftwood has been leaching tannins for months now, and I kinda like it. It's my Oscar tank, and they don't seem to care. I like to think of it as amazon water :)

Its a 90 gallon tank near a window, and yes I presoaked the wood. So what would be the quickest way to make the water clear? Currently I have a Penguin 350 and an AquaClear 110, should I add anything in them (no charcoal in either one)?

move it far away from windows :) IMO.

carbon generaly absorbs meds&mins&chems, but it might help.

and alot of water changes. get a python tube that connects to your sink if you don't already got one.

there are several products out there for alge blooms. but i dunno how well they work. never really like putting xtra chems into my tanks.

as for the filters. IMO loose the penguin, and replace with another AC110, or canister. ;)
