Been looking around for someone to go with my oscar besides my JD who I think I will be giving to my brother. Severum's keep coming up and the only ones that I can honestly find locally are Green's, well without ordering which is a pain to do when there could be personality clashes.

But have any of you kept them together? Did it go well?
I know the personality from fish to fish is always different and so what should I look for when I am looking at them?

They will be with my albino/lutino oscar, who is not aggressive at all. He pays no attention to the others in the tank except at feeding time, he seems to get mad at the clown loaches for stealing his food.

oh forgot to mention is my oscar is 4 inches, so I am wanting to get one now that is close to his size so they can grow together and it be much easier.

also....easier to get a couple and see the personalities and decide on one or should I just take a guess.

What is the current tank size and stock?

I keep Severums with my Oscars and with enough room you should be ok keeping them together.

tank size, mates and if you would upgrade in the future will help us make the best suggestions.at the oscars small size it is possible that he gets bullied/injured until he outgrows whatever tankmates you choose.sevs have a variety of aggression.another choice would be blue acara,or others in that group

Oscar is in a 55 currently and will be moved into a 100gallon as he grows. There's a bala shark and 2 clown loaches with him right now besides the JD that will be rehomed if my friend decides to take it. They both are pretty gentle and get along well, JD doesn't beat up on the oscar at all. They've been together for about 3 months now. The JD just tends to hide and only will come out to eat and then is right back to his log. I just want something that will be out more with my oscar.

clown loaches grow slow, but end up 8-10 inches i think.they might do better within a group.the size of your cichlids now have not fully developed their potential.some fish when hit 5-6 inches change attitude.it will be good if they grow together for the best chance of accepting others.i would get a few small acaras,or sevs,re-home the JD,and the bala.get 3 more loaches.the bala shark will outgrow the 100 and also need a school,i read they get stressed out if alone later.

I am waiting for the stores around here to get more loaches, for whatever reason there is some shortage and I have not been able to find anymore in the last few weeks, I got the last two that were left at the LFS. I plan to get the three more. My two are about 4 inches right now and they do grow very, very slow. My bala had been in a group but the others passed away soon after I brought them home and he has grown like crazy and seems happy but I bought them not realizing how large they get when he was only about 1.5inches, stupidly not researching them before and the person at the store not telling me anything about them. He's about 5 inches and I know I need to take him to the LFS to find him a new home, just haven't done it yet, because I enjoy the personality of them but know I cannot give it a home long term.

Them being young is exactly why I want to add the last addition to the tank so they will have the best chance of growing together and getting along. I was thinking of just one severum because I keep reading that if you end up with two of the same sex, they can be very aggressive toward each other and I wouldn't want to risk that end up happening.

I've actually thought about a knife but my only worry is feeding them and reading how difficult it can be to get them to eat when they are in with big cichlids because of the others gobbling up their food. But I guess that is something that will have to just be dealt with and figured out if they are what I decide on. Friday I am going to go and look at the new LFS and see what they all have, he said they were getting some severums in as well so I can look at them along with their knives.

Severums are among my favorites. My 6-7" O gets bullied by my sevs. He really gets bullied by my True parrot. If I was to be in your shoes I would hit aquabid and get something a little more unique than greens. Dont get me wrong I really like my greens but Notatus or atabapo's are really nice to.
