my green severum has been darker than usual and i was wondering if its normal for them to get darker and lighter. ive been experimenting with temps to see if it was too cold but when warmed still stayed dark. water is clean and tank mates are fine. any help?

I have a rotkeil sev and he changes his color from dark to light depending on his mood. His stress bars are like that too. Sometimes he shows all of his bars and sometimes just half of them. So I think its normal for sevs to change colors a little.

Agree with hulk...I have a rotkeil also and his color changes pretty drastically. Most times his bars are very faint, other times very dark. When he is mad, he gets so dark he looks like a turquoise sev and you almost can't tell he has bars.

I'm noticing something similar. I picked up 4 which are around 2-2.5" and two are constantly dark green with no visible bars, only spots. The other two are very faint with black bars. They all swim around together and act normal. I wasn't sure if it was the difference in males / females or not, guess not.

Severums will change their colors based on their mood -- sometimes dominant fish will take on a different color than submissive fish, or they will change colors when agitated, stressed, etc.

I've had severums that never lose their bars and others that are the opposite, never showing them. Most juvies will keep their bars for a while as camouflage. This is pretty standard juvenile coloration.
