It could be done, but personally I would stick with south American cichlids. The firemouths are centrals and while not the most aggressive CA cichlids, they can get a bit more aggressive than the acara, and like to be in groups of 5+. Also, while both fish are adaptable, the firemouths prefer hard water and higher pH, while acaras usually like softer/lower. Some other good suggestions would be:
festivums
guianacara gaeyi
keyhole cichlids
bolivian rams
I like the Rams idea! But what about the higher temps needed for them will the acara be ok?

Thanks again for your help. I have hard water & a ph of 8. Imperial Tropicals ph is 8. I think I will be OK. IM going to look at the other Cichlids you mentioned. I think it will be best I introduce them at the same time so IM hoping they have some of the ones you mentioned.

Hmm, pH of 8 and hard water is not ideal for south American cichlids. The acara you have is a hybrid cichlid and most likely very adaptable, should be OK in the water. I am sure the fish I have listed could be acclimated, but long term may not do as well in your water.
A great central American cichlid which would like your water is the rainbow cichlid, multispinosa. They get to about 5", and are not very aggressive, probably the least aggressive CA. I would look into them as well. Could be kept in a pair or in a small group.

Imperial Tropicals have Red Rainbow Cichlids. They are pretty. They have 4" males & females.

no problem, & yes I looked at the website those "red rainbow cichlids" are the right ones. I would personally get a group of 1m and 3 f. But if you get a group of the smaller unsexed ones, it would probably be fine even if you had more than one male, these guys are mellow.

I can't get one?

You could, but I find that with cichlids, two is not a great number, better to have 3 or 4. If only two, the dominant one's bullying will all fall on the one other fish's shoulders. It may not be a problem with these relatively peaceful cichlids, but it is a possibility. If there are two or three subdominant fish to share the load, they all get by okay, whereas one fish might too stressed out.
