I just got a GSP. When I bought him he had a white/grey under-belly and it seems to be getting darker. I have tried to make the transition from the LPS as easy and stress free as possible.

Will his belly ever go back to the lovely white colour?

I have checked the water etc and it is all fine.

Define "fine".

Nitrites, ammonia, nitrates, salinity, pH, KH, GH, temp? (with numbers, not "fine".)

Is he eating, what are you feeding it?

What size tank and who else lives in it?

I'll run a test and let you know.

It is 125 litres and has 3 of the fish in the attached pic. (i dont know the name of them)

He is being hand fed prawns.

Your tank is cycleing.

Ammonia is VERY toxic, Water changes are needed right away, and will be needed daily for several weeks.

The other fish are mollies. Puffers kill their tank mates. Period. You cannot keep puffers in a community tank. They MUST go in a species only tank, your mollies will get killed if you don't move them.

You haven't mentioned the salinity of the water. Green Spotted puffers are NOT a fresh water fish. If you have put this fish into fresh water, that explains why its dying.

You need to put it in a brackish water tank with the brackish water made from sea salt. (Not "Aquarium salt".)

Some one just posted today a caution to other puffer owners about not listening to the advise about puffers killing their tank mates: http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=322145

I dont have any way of measuring the salinity of the water but I was recommended to use 'Aquarium Pharmaceuticals-Aquarium salt' and have followed the instructions on there to create a brackish environment.

So would you (kdrun76) recommend a water change?

Woah. I have a GSP and he has lived in my ten gallon for months.

He changes from white to black on the bottom all the time. I currently believe it is because of hunger.

He was black before I feed and then turns back to normal after he eats.

But one times he stayed black so I am a little confused. The params have been perfect his whole life after walmart. I think it is more of a mood thing.

Don't flame about the ten gallon. He loves it and never swims more than 6 inches in one direction before he forgets what he is doing and sinks to the bottom.

He eats only snails and Bloodworms.

Well I know that happy healthy GSPs should have a white belly. I owned one for a short period of time before I realized I just didn't have the right living conditions for him and passed him on.

I would definitely go by kdrun76's advise, and he's really going to need brackish water.

Well yeah. Mine is in Brackish. I have it at .010 then I let it drop to .005 and then I mix a new batch to bring it up to .007 then a week later up to .010. repeat.

I missed the part where his was in fresh. OOps. But yeah The belly color changing doesn't seem to be a problem.

Your 'Aquarium Pharmaceuticals-Aquarium salt' Wont work. It will just make the fish . . . well. Nothing.

Get instant ocean or the blue bag.
