Okay so about a week ago I went to this pet store called Harps where I live, and I saw this cute little bubbly thing just sitting in the corner of a tank by himself filled with plants CAKED with algae. Ew. I brought him home after asking the guy what his diet was, his behavior, how he was towards other fish.. the basics. Told me he was freshwater.
Brought him home, looked him up on the internet. Said he needed salt. So being the good owner I am I went out in the middle of the night to a all night fish store and got the kind they recommended. This was from a saltwater fish store. lol
I get home, do what they tell me to do which was drip it till it gets to a desired level he needs. I noticed he wasn't eating the next day. Got my water tested, they said it was fine, told me what to get him for a better diet. So I did, which was guppys, ghostshrimp, snails and something else.
Well 2 days after, the water turned all foggy and he seemed to be doing okay. So I hopped on my xbox and 2 hours later turned to check on him and he was dead.

I don't know if he was stressed or I did something wrong in the process of them telling me all of this.

Okay, judging from what you said, i'm guessing you may have upped the salinity of the water too quickly for him to acclimate properly... especially if you drip acclimated him from freshwater to salt water all in one go...

So i guess what exactly was the procedure you took to acclimating him? i.e. was it over a period of days/weeks/all in one go??? also, how high was the end result when you were done acclimating him...

Anyway, don't be discouraged... since there are still other puffers which are full freshwater you could keep if you ever decide to get another puffer...

What is the salinity at now? Do you have something to measure it? Do a 50% water change right now with FW, in hopes to save some of your established bacteria--that is, if this tank was cycled before you raised the salinity.

and don't rush into getting the water salted.
Take your time, do it very slowly and your filters will make it through the conversion.
We tend to go too fast.
No need to rush.....

THEY ARE???

Anyone know how long they would live in purely freshwater, I've always been curious, trying not to derail but feel this is a good time to ask this question, I know people have kept them in purely fresh.

not very long, and only when they are very young juvies. I would say a month at the most IMO

As soon as they adjust to their new surroundings, I suggest upping the SG. A month or sooner. I doubt anyone has kept them long-term (into their mid-teens) in FW.
