So I looked up their wild diet but couldn't find any captive examples..

Would they go for the same diet as a similiar looking bluegill or an oscar?
what should the temperature be? would they survive in a slightly(?) tropical tank at 78~80F?

are they gonna eat freezdriet items like bloodworms, tubifex worms, and krill?do they eat fish when their around 5"? if so, what size fish would they eat?

yes somewhat tropical better room temp or even better colder then that most native perfer the cold waters, also try to mimc where it came from better for the fish. all those foods you listed. i would try cut up night cralwers(sp). guppies. they defindly have a simalr diet if not identily(sp) as a bluegill.

Green sunfish will take just about any standard fish food. Pellets, frozen ,freeze dried etc. Room temp is best but they can survive in warmer waters.

They'll eat and survive on almost anything, but a diet of high quality pellets, krill and some live/frozen foods seem to bring out their colors and helps them thrive just like most carnivores.

Temp isn't real important, but they seem to like it 69-75 best though they can tolerate more tropical temps. I keep mine at 76 right now and he's quite healthy and active, but there is a red devil staying with them so I don't have the option of lowering temperature by more than about a degree or so.

would they go for big floating flakes?
and is there a positive way to tell their gender?

shadowbass; oh you have one! how big is it? and what's the diet?

They'd probably go for floating flakes. They'll usually go for anything. Usually the males have much more bold coloring and pattern than females but I'm not sure if that's a positive way to I.D. I'm sure someone else can answer that.

Mine is about 6-7 inches. We've had him since he was around 2 inches long. Though he's not very long he's quite thick:

He may or may not be done growing yet, not sure.

He eats hikari floating cichlid pellets, sinking carnivore pellets, krill, silversides and any frozen stuff I have on hand (but mostly the pellets and krill) along with my other natives and red devil.

Trout pellets I would think are best.. And are inexpensive :) You can buy mcuh more for much less and get the same quality:)

just my opinion

haha they don't look too cute from the front..kinda like a wolffish!

So is he around 7" I'm guessing..?
Would 1&2" fish be safe from that size greenie?

I caught this guy but would you consider this boldly colored?

Can't tell as well from out of water.

This is mine from the side:

They can be much more vivid when breeding.

None of the definite females I've seen look like that. But like I said, I don't breed them so I'm not sure if that's a completely valid way to sex them. If mine dig a nest and try to spawn I figure I have a male, lol.

1 inch fish would DEFINATELY NOT be safe from a fish that size. 2" fish MIGHT depending on the species and the greens personality. A higher bodied species like another sunfish MIGHT be safe if he's not hungry but a skinnier two inch minnow would get eaten fast. Mine will scarf down 3 inch minnows.

and how big is yours currently?
