They can be much more vivid when breeding.
None of the definite females I've seen look like that. But like I said, I don't breed them so I'm not sure if that's a completely valid way to sex them. If mine dig a nest and try to spawn I figure I have a male, lol.
1 inch fish would DEFINATELY NOT be safe from a fish that size. 2" fish MIGHT depending on the species and the greens personality. A higher bodied species like another sunfish MIGHT be safe if he's not hungry but a skinnier two inch minnow would get eaten fast. Mine will scarf down 3 inch minnows.
