I picked up a Green Terror earlier today to put in a 55 gallon aquarium. The GT itself is only about an inch long, if even. The more I look into it, the more I'm thinking I want to try to get a pair and attempt to breed them, sooner or later going into a 75 or a 90.

My question is, how aggressive are GT's to other GT's? I was thinking of picking up a couple more and letting them grow together. The rest of the GT's at the LFS are no bigger than maybe an inch and a half, so they're all about the same size. Could four or five Green Terrors, at least as Juvies, live together in the same aquarium without much fuss?

IMO there going to be aggression issues. 55 gallon to small for 4 GT. I'm sure there are people who got lucky and got it to work for 2. Your best bet would be to upgrade the tank first before getting more fish.

it would work as a grow out tank for awhile but probably not more than 6months, once the GTs get to about 4in and pair up the extras will most likely be killed if you don't remove them, growing out a group together though is the best way to get a pair but you will def need AT LEAST a 75g once the pair gets larger (90g would be better) but you would have a bit before the pair outgrow the 55g since GTs tend to be slower growers

That's good to hear. I figured this was the likeliest way to get a pair other than purchasing a pair together that is already half the size it will be as a full adult.

I've got friends that I know have wanted one for their aquariums and I'm sure that they would be more than happy to take whatever GT's have not paired off. Thanks for all of your responses guys, glad to hear them :)

also when cichlids grow up with other cichlids from a young age they are more likely to tolerate other companions as they get larger, whereas if you raised a GT alone and then put him with other fish he would try to be king of the tank and maybe even kill your other fish.

youre right about purchasing a pair, normally buying a small group of juvies is enough to get one pair. I believe there was a thread yesterday where a guy kept a bunch of GT's in a tank and the male spawned with 2 seperate females. if he could keep 2 females with eggs, a male and still some other GT's in his tank then I say you've got a good enough shot especialyl just to grow them out.

Good luck!

After getting three more "green terrors" today, that brings me up to four.

However, the more and more I look at them, I'm becoming less confident that they may actually be Green Terrors. They might be Blue Acaras, but I just can't be sure. All I know is I sure won't be happy if they turn out to be Blue Acaras lol

Is there any specific way to be able to tell juvies apart? I've looked everywhere and I do understand that there is a big debate about them and what you can/can't tell the difference of. I'll try to get pics up tonight/tomorrow for somewhat easier identification, but I can't promise they'll be great since I have to use my phone :swear:

at that size it could be really hard to tell since some GTs dont quite have their orange coloring on their caudal fins yet, but im sure some of the more experienced acara keepers on here will be able to help more, you may just have to wait until they grow a bit though HOPE THEY ARE GTs!!!
