Green Terror Aggression Towards Each Other?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That's what I was figuring. Older is always easier, though I'm still not particularly good at ID'ing freshwater fish lol

Well I'm near positive the biggest one (which actually seems to be about 2" or so) has white on its caudal fin, rather than orange. That one I'm sure is probably a White Saum. On the next smallest (probably about 1.25") seems like it has a very slight coloration on its caudal fin, looking kinda orange, but hard to tell. Guessing that one is probably a Gold Saum. The others show nothing yet, but they're barely 1", if even.

Is coloration on the caudal fin really a sure fire way of telling if it's a GT or not?

if it has edging on the caudal fin then it is either a GT or a GT/acara mix, as far as i know the acaras dont get any color edging on their caudal fins, also dont be so quick to assume your little one is a white saum, at that size i have had gold saums with white edging and it turned orange once they got a little larger

Your best bet would be to upgrade the tank first before getting more fish.
:nilly:They are still babies.

I've got friends that I know have wanted one for their aquariums...
If you know of anyone that would want some midas cichlids, I've got a breeding pair of midas's. They've got about a hundred babies that I need to unload. (I'm at the far end of Lake Emma Rd.) The male is leucistic and the female has normal coloration.

However, the more and more I look at them, I'm becoming less confident that they may actually be Green Terrors.

Get some at a different lfs. Both Fishy Business and the Petsmart across from Gander carries GT's all the time. If you bought from one of them, buy some more from the other. That way you'll have better genetic diversity and you won't have wasted time if they turn out to be something else.

Blue Acara will have a black band right below its eye... GT won't. Blue Acara has dark vertical stripes throughout its body, GT doesn't. GT has a thick white/orange edge on the caudal fin, acaras usually don't... and when they do, it's very thin.

You know, small world, I live kinda in the middle of Lake Emma Road. I don't technicallly live in Lake Mary, but I don't technically live in Longwood either lol.

I actually bought these from the Petsmart, but I go to Fishy Business all the time (where I make just about all of my saltwater purchases). They didn't seem to have many when I went over the weekend, but they get new shipments in every Tuesday if I'm not mistaken so for all I know they got a bunch of them in since then. I'll probably stop by there tomorrow or Friday and check.

Even as juvies? Because if that's the cause then I'm 95% sure that they are all Blue Acaras because they all have that little black band below their eyes. Even with that, though, two of them have a reasonably thick outline on the caudal fin, but two of them don't. This is why I get all confused. These guys seem to have symptoms of both, but I'm just not buying that they're crosses, either.

the pictures shown were of adults (well larger juvies at least), GTs do have the line through their eyes as well when small, most likely they are Gold Saums, let them get like an inch bigger and we will be better able to tell

Sounds good to me. I might still go run by my LFS (Fishy Business) and see if they have any of similar size. Regardless I'll let them get to 2" or 3" before I judge too heavily.

Lol small world. I go to fishy business all the time. They are real good about knowing there stuff. If you got your GT from them, the chances are that they are GT. However thats a differant story for pet smart and petco. Just to give you an example, petsmart sold me a red devia/ Midas that was labeled as a common gold fish. haha

as for telling a gt from an acara at that sizes is going to be very hard. The pic posted shows the differance but that at near adult if not adult ages. at 1-3 inches both fish carrie very similar color patterns.

That's what I figured. Makes me nervous every time someone says an Acara trait that I see in the fish, but then makes me feel slightly better when I see a GT trait. I'll give it a while, let them grow a little and see what develops.
