Any green terror owners can answer this please?

I have a 6-7" green terror in a 130g tank, along with other S.A.Cichlids, all have been in there for almost 6 months, no agressions except for my jack dempsey telling the others to leave him alone.

Now a week ago, the green terror started to be more agressive with the rest of the fish, even the JD which is a few inches bigger than him. I thought I might have a passive green terror...but now i'm wondering, does the agressivity in those fish show up at a later age (much like, say, a snakehead)?

Just wondering...not a big problem, there are no over-agressions, but lets say the oscars are quiet these days ;)

he will get more aggressive as time goes on and he gets larger. they arent called terrors for nothing. some may end up as pretty passive fish, but all could hold their own with oscars and dempseys

I have no clue as to whay they are called green terrors... I have 4 large ones and 7 or 8 smaller ones and they are all good tank mates.

I've owned large cichlids for over 35 years, and I sure don't know everything yet...but Green Terrors, particularly large males do become aggressive/territorial....not nearly to the extent of Red Devils or Dovii etc., but I am surprised your Dempsey allowed this? I had problems with Severums and G. Terrors for some reason...they seemed to just hate each other?

Green terrors compared to the heavy duty Ca/Sa cichlids are usually only mildly territorial. Even if you come across a truly aggresive one they lack the physical ability to back up their aggression.

Well he had parasites last week and was a little sick. For some reason this jack is VERY sensitive to any parasites, he will get them from feeders and no other fish will in the tank...go figure. So when he's sick he's hiding and not behaving normally...that could be why.

But really, that is the one and only jack I have ever owned, and he is not that agressive...I have much more agressive cichlids than this big guy. He's a quiet one i guess. He does scare other fish but never any physical contact, or barely.

Thanks for all your answers !

I agree that you can have problems with them but haven't you noticed that it mainly happens when they are keep in small tanks ? - 90 gal or less.

Marce have you ever owned a full grown 11"-13" GT. I bet you have a little 29 with a dovii in it making a comment like you just did. I have seen a 12" GT run a 250 gallon tank with full grown Jags and Trimacs. They have all the right tools to hold there own unless your matching them up with a dovii or umbee, a GT can and will hold its own. But typically they aren't over agressive like your RD,FH,Dovii but that doesn't mean they dont have the necessary tools to fend off other large cichlids "get a clue noob".............

Wow. How amazingly perceptive of you! Why just because I just joined this forum and have only a few posts and because I am only 17 I must just be some stupid kid who doesnt know anything about fish, afterall my post count is directly reflective on my knowledge of fish because it is impossible to bring any prior knowledge to the table right? Jackoscar I admit by using your mastery of logic and your obivoiusly superior knowledge of fish you have shown me for what I really am stupid kid with no knowledge about fish. You have defeated me. I respectfully step away from this topic and this forum. You showing me for what I really am is too much for me. I am far to embarassed to ever post here again.........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

    ...

Yeah right. You are exceptionally ignorant. You judge me by my post count and my age? Thats asinine on your part my age has little bearing on my knowledge of fish. I have no clue what your problem is, being I am a noob I havent the experience nor the knowledge to even guess. Be that as it may I feel its imparative that I let you in on a few secrets:

Firstly no I have not owned a 13" green terror and you have not either. How did I come to such a conclusion? Well true green terrors grow no larger than 8". The fish you are refering to as a green terror is actually one of the fish commonly called a suam and not truly a green terror at all. True green terrors were out of the hobby for 25 years and only recently became available. I guess you knew that and was testing me right. Yeah..I'll bet that you also knew that real thing is much more aggresive than the fake you are talking about right? I have owned both and although the true green terror is many more aggresive than the suams they are both similar in morphology. When it comes to aggresive encounters they are in my honest opinion nearly indentical in physical capablilty. Both can be quite aggresive however their aggresion has NOTHING to do with physical capablity. I stand by my original statement that when it comes to fighting green terrors are vastly inferior to the heavy duty CAs. You'll find that most hobbyists agree with me. The simple fact is that no matter how aggresive they are they still are weak slim bodied, thin scaled and weak jawed. And when it comes to fighting they may start it but most any other equally sized cichlid is capable of laying the smack down on one. For goodness sake I had one get betean down by a psittacus that was smaller than it. A psittacus nothing more than a big severum.

And far as you seeing a 12" suam dominating a tank full of managuense and trimacs. Well I seroiusly doubt that. Either the trimacs and jags were very small or they amazingly unaggresive for their species.

P.S. If you were to bet that my dovii was in 29 gallon you would be wrong my female dovii lives in a 120 by herself.

Have a nice day!
