Hello! I just added my GT and my Jag to a 300 gal tank. The only tankmates since it is new are two large silver dollars. The tank is 8ft long with lots of rocks and wood. They have only been in for a couple of hours and already they are both scratched up (GT is wearing the worst of it) from mouth fighting for dominance. Unfortunately at this point I have no other large cichlids to add to the tank to distribute aggression. What should I do? Let them sort it out? Move the GT back to a smaller but safe tank? The only other tankmate I could add at this time is a 15 inch redtail - shovelnose cross catfish. Looking for some good advice. I don't want my GT killed. Thanks for your time and ideas.

Let them fight it out and provide plenty of hiding spaces for the loser. A 300 gallon tank should be more than big enough for the loser to escape with its life and the fish to coexist. If you are really worried then take the gt out and don't add him until you can find at least 2 other large cichlids to put in the tank along with him.

If the gt is already getting an ass whooping letting them sort it out is a bad idea.
I'd split them up.

3 hours in and things have settled. There are lots of hiding places for sure. If fighting persists i will split or build a divider. Thanks. Anyone else who has experienced this please let me know what happened or what you did. Thanks again!

I have found it best to separate new additions with a divider for a few days (if possible) to let each fish claim a territory on opposite sides of the tank. Still not guaranteed to always keep everything peaceful, but at least the initial introduction to the new tank can be a little less stressful.

300 should be gtg. "Most" jags are not that bad unless they're thrown in a thunder dome type situation or breeding. All of mine have gone on rampages here/there, but a 300 should be plenty of room to deal with a CA beast mode moment with exception of a dovii. It could get dicey if the GT's growth rate falls too far behind though.

imo get more cichlids fast or split them up, i have a 13 inch butti with multiple smaller hard cichlids inc jag midas and trimac and still i have to remove fish due to aggression in my 300g dd. 300g is nowhere near as big as you think once cichlids grow ime.... how big are they?
