Sounds like you have everything you need. Just give them time, Mine have spawned five times in almost three years. Are you sure about the sex? the behavior sounds backwards, the one in your avatar is Male(and a very nice one)

Idk how the behavior sounds backwards cause every other cichlid I had did the same things they did before they spawned.

Ok well, I've bred more than just this pair and the Males were not only bigger but they were the ones chasing and Initiating EVERYTHING. This may not always be the case, just sounded strange to me.

Can you post some pics! Im thinking about getting about 6 sm GT and breeding then. Do you sell them?

i will post some pics for . i dont sell em yet but will once i get some fry.

they both had recently had a growth spurt . hes got maybe a quarter inch bigger then her now . i wasn't saying she constantly chasing him around but she does when he's in his corner of the tank and he was the one who started the rituals when he started wacking her with his tail then they were goin head to tail spinning in circles and locking lips . i know females usually do chase the male when they are close to spawning well atleast thats what my firemouths would do.

Thats some interesting behavior to me, sounds like you have a pretty cool female. Sorry to question the aspects you already seem to know about. Good luck with the breeding. :)

yeah it is interesting thats why i had to post about it , she is cool lol i always thought it was funny how she was more aggressive then he is especially when i put other fish with them, he only really gets aggressive when another fish goes to his corner or in his spongebob house. its kool any little input helps.

this is my pair (female on the left and the male on the right)

IME, the female is less inclined to spawn if the male isn't considerably larger than her. I think its down to her wanting to achieve the best success rate with fry (better protection). But if you provide a piece of slate or smooth rock angled at 45 degrees and do some cool water changes you will encourage spawning.

On a side note - from the picture i think it is possible you have two males. Also, if you got a male and female both at 2.5" the male would have more than a quarter of an inch on the female. I got 5 at 2" in december and the male is now over 6" and the female nearer 3". So the growth rate varies massively. Tying on with what blue phantom said, about strange behaviour, i have never had my pair liplock, nor have i had the female show to the male. Its always the male following the female and flirting.

Not saying you definately have two males, but it may be something you might want want to look into and consider.

I thought they were two males at first too but I vented them 3 times to be positive. At first he was growing faster then her till I start giving them cichlid staple and cichlid gold and she quickly caught up to him . I might get 2 or 3 smaller ones and see what happens . The pic doesnt do them justice its very hard to tell
