While cleaning my tank yesterday I found my little green terror ferociously guarding a couple of hundred eggs in a terracotta pot. Today I moved him or her along with the eggs into the sump away from the midevil, texas, jd and pleco.

Firstly, should I have left him or her and the eggs where they were?

And secondly, are the eggs even fertilized? How do you know?

Thats a she and the eggs would likely have been eaten if you left them in the tank. Not too familiar with breeding, when I do its an accident but I do know if they turn white then you can put the pot back in the tank because healthy eggs stay clean and clear

I guess time will tell. And here I was thinking that might have been the male... lol. Thanks mate.

100% female and yif the eggs are not fertilized they very quickly turn white. If they are fertilized you should be able to see small black dots on each of the eggs.

Good luck

Do you have only a female GT? Many female cichlids will lay eggs on her own. Without a male GT, the eggs aren't fertilized and will fungus out in a few days. But there is a small chance that other male CAs tried to hybridize with her. Do you see any tankmates guarding the eggs? If so, you will provide a living proof if GT can hybridize outside the acara family.

I do have another GT yes. Its nowhere near as colorful tho. That's why I thought this one might have been the male. Thanks for helping me clear that one up.

Really not sure who fertilized the eggs. I think being her first time she may have gone a little over the top with the whole aggression... she wouldn't let ANYONE down her end of the tank. So it makes it hard to figure out who her partner is.

Breeding fish will do that. I find if the parents dont share the duty then one will kick out the lazy parent and pretty much go insane fending off everything themselves. I was going to say unless you have another male GT then they arent fertile, but less than a month ago someone had their umbee spawn with fish that "couldnt" fertilize so im not going to say what is and isnt possible for hybrids. Could make an interesting mystery if they hatch
