no gt in a 55.. and i strongly feel that a 55 is to small for a jack demspey to. males can and will obtain 10 inches if not 12. i saw a breeding pair in my lfs tank and the male jack was 12 inches and in a 55. if its a female jack then that should be fine as they useally top out at 6 to 8 sometimes 10 inches. try and go for 1 firemouth 1 convict ( all males ) and one blue acara. again all males so no hybreds occure from the fish wanting to breed with each other

Could I add a Jewel to your recommendation?

jewel would probably be ok since they only get like 4in max as long as you can keep aggression under control

good luck keeping a jewel under control with that stock. the one i had was 5" and almost killed a firemouth and convict of similar size.

yeah iv only had jewels as a pair, and i knew they were little SOBs and they tore up my BGK bad enough that i had to put him down :( but like i said iv only had them as a pair so i don't really know what their aggression is like on their own... if they are that aggressive then yeah i would just stick with what was previously suggested

if you are getting all these fish at about 1.5" they will work in a 55 for about 2 months after that up grade to the 125 with an fx5 and use the 55 as a sump so you have more water and have a chance with the bio load.

An abnormally large male GT can attain 12", but 10" is much more common for a large male... 6~8" is more common for a female...

An abnormally large male JD can attain 12", but 10" is much more common for a large male... 6~8" is more common for a female...

12" is very common for Oscars with larger being possible...

If you keep an Oscar in a 55 gal I highly suggest you do not add tankmates.

A male JD and a male GT will clash. They look to similar and will not want to be 'neighbors' with overlapping territories. Adult GTs tend to be a little bit tougher than adult JDs of the same size/gender... So for a community tank I would psuh you toward a Dempsey over a GT.

It wouldn't surprise me at all to see a Jewel Cichlid beat up on a Firemouth, especially if the Jewels were paired off. But I've kept a pair of Jewels with a pair of Dempseys on several occasions (different pairs in different set ups) and the Dempseys pairs were consistently the more prominent force in the tank.

All in all, I do not feel a 55 gal tank is nearly big enough to 'properly' house a community of Cichlids in the range that you wish to keep. You will have much better long term success if you choose smaller growing more docile species...

When funds allow a larger tank (such as a 125 gal) stocked with a mix of Cichlids like you are considering will be a very interesting tank.
