tank was running for a week before the fish were in. and i looked at a compatibility chart a few, and it said be caustious with this combination. i was hoping if i started a few different kinds when they were young they would make their own dominances and be peaceful when they became larger.
and okay about the ammonia levels ill have to get on that asap.

what fish would u recommend with fronts?

Well, I have two GTs about one female and one male, and if you want some good tankmates with "GTs you should look into southern american cichlids, like oscars, red devils, etc... but first you need a bigger tank. a 30 gallon isnt even enough for one GT let alone 5 fishes. you need atleast a 75 or more to house 2 GTs.

It takes longer than a week to cycle an aquarium. You may just be starting to cycle now.. I'd do an approx. 30% water change and see if that perks him up a bit. Do you add Prime, or anything else to your tank? Have you done any water changes yet?

(BTW - Their aggressive tendencies kick in as they become older. However, that doesn't change the fact that they need different water parameters.)

also another question. if the ph level and ammonia and other parameters are not great and thats resulting in the GT being sluggish and stuff. why are the others not doing the same. they are both very lively still.
thanks i really appreciate this.

They will be doing the same very shortly. Did you do any research before you set your aquarium up? Do you know about cycling, water changes, tank maintenance, etc? Those are even more important than compatibility issues.

Dissy gave you good advice.

Your tank is cycling. The ammonia will reach deadly levels quickly, do a 50% water change ASAP this will help remove some of the ammonia in the tank. The upside of a 30 gal tank is this is only 15 gallons that need to be replaced. You will need to change about 25% of the water daily from then on for the next week or so while monitoring your water with the teast kit. When you change the water leave it a couple of inches from the top so the water from the filter falls into the tanks for increased surface agitation this will help speed up the process a little and help oxigenate the water, you could additionally hook up and air stone if you have one.

If you can get an established sponge filter or some filter media from your LFS or a friend to put in your tank or add to your filter it will jump start your cycle and speed things up considerably. If you explain your situation they should be able to help you out. Good luck and please keep us posted. We'll tackle the other problems later, lest get through this first. Ask all the questions you want and we'll do our best to help you.
