Hiya, looking for some advice.

Just moved my GT (8") into a (roughly) 120G tank. He is all alone currently. He is extremely aggressive towards me (well, the glass) He has never really shared a tank with any other fish before but I am thinking now he has much much more space, I could try and find him some tankmates?

I would love some large clown loaches but am I right in assuming they will probably just get terrorized? Would trying to add a female GT be a disaster?

Any suggestions welcome!

anything you put in there better be able to hold its own against your gt cause your gt already owns the tank. if i were you i wouldnt put one more fish in there, bad news, i would stock it with like 4 or 5 cichlids that are close to the size of the gt. good luck with it

The loaches might actually be a good idea . My GT used to be housed with a few cichlids and a yoyo loach, it showed signs of aggresion towards all other fish except the loach. The GT would attack the other fish if they came near its territory but for some reason it would gently push the loach away. To think of it the loach isn't bothered by any of the cichlids, which are all larger than itself. BTW clown loaches get alot bigger than yoyo loaches.

The trouble you're going to have is that you have an 8" GT that is not used to sharing his space. If you try somthing tough enough to hold it's own it might take the tank from your GT and bully it or the other way around either way I doubt you'll acheive the harmonious co-exsistance you're looking for at this point. You could try rearranging all the decore in the tank and introduce a female that might work but have a devider handy just in case.

Yeah I would say use a divider at first perhaps. See how the fish reacts with the divider and work from there.

My experience with bigger cichlids is that they'll usually accept/tolerate smaller new tankmates but it's a toss up when it comes to fishes similar in size as they can feel threaten. With a tank that size you shouldn't have problem adding small size cichlids (I like inexpensive all male convicts, don't want them breeding), clown loaches, plecos, bichirs, etc.

With cichlids it's usually about trial and errors as to what they'll accept.

^What did you put the cons in with? I'm asking because I tried that a while back with my RD, I thought I'd add some cons cause they are tough as nails and figured if I put in enough hiding places they would be ok. This was in a 90 I had. He hunted down every one (6) and killed them, maybe with a GT in bigger tank it could work, def not the same level of agression as and RD. That was the last time I tried to put anything with him.

12-14" male Midas in a 75g. I added other fishes in with the Midas just fine too but just recommended Convicts first since they're relatively easy to find and inexpensive.

Nice fish, I guess he's more accepting of company, they all have their own personality that's for sure.

Change the deco and put up a divider. Introduce a female GT and see how he reacts while the divider is up. If he seems okay with her in the tank, you may have a new tankmate for him. I tried Convicts in my Festae tank. They didn't last long at all. All of the Cons were killed except one female that to this day lives peacefully with the Festae. Weird! I hope you figure out a way to add another fish to your tank.
