pretty much a case by case basis when trying to add tank mates for large cichlids. But from reading many threads here in MFK, the usual candidates for small tank mates for GTs are #1 Clown Loaches, #2 Convict Cichlid, and #3 jewel cichlid. I've had success before with a school of small barbs like tigers and rosies. But this was just a small GT, about 8".
You might try a female GT. Definitely get some Silver Dollarsl, at least 6 but in that tank you could get 10 or more. They should calm him down a bit too. They might make it easier to introduce some new fish (assuming they are tough).
