Would a green terror and plants be a good mix? I know big cichlids destroy them, but is it always the case, or is there instances where some cichlids dont harm the plants?

What are some medium/large cichlids that are OK with live plants? Thanks

probably not i wouldn't try it. the only cichlids i know of that like plants are anglefish and discus but someone may prove me wrong

+1....my terror up rooted everything.

my terror was fine with plants. the con was the worst offender. i think my GT was the exception rather than the rule though as the general consensus everywhere seems to be an overwhelming "no".

In my experience, it highly depends on the way you decorate...

In a big empty tank with a rock on one side and a plant on the other... the plant is screwed...

But in a tank with ample rocks/pots/etc to swim in/under/around/between/through... with a plant here or there... there is a good chance the fish will remain occupied elsewhere and pay no attention to the plant...

But in a tank with a lot of plants, it's hard not to play with them...

That said... I have a pair of GTs and the female doesn't harm the few plants in the tank at all and often hides behind/in them... the male thinks it's funny to swim around with plants in his mouth...

i see what you mean. my tank was heavily decprated with wood, rocks, plants and a despised convict so i guess he may have had other things on his mind than destroying my plants.

DON'T DO IT!!!!
my mate had floating plant/weed in his tank and his beautiful 20cm GT gorged himself to death :(

personally i wouldn't recommend it. IME it won't just uproot the plants it will most likely eat it too

my tank is heavily planted with several medium size cichlids (including a green terror) 3 cat fish and a polypterus. the plants are placed around large immovable objects (rocks, bog wood etc) and i have no problem with damaged plants. i loose the odd one always during the night. i do not think this is caused by the cichlids but by the polypterus as he goes through plants rather than around.

i found that any plants with red leaves or markings are attacked by my cichlids and will only last a few hours.

waxy type leaved plants seem to fair better from my experience.

the fish also seem happier with plants in the tank as they act as a break in their line of vision reducing fights and aggression, they now only fight at one end of the tank so tend to take it inturns to go there.

plants are pretty cheap so i would definately give them a try and see as they have made a noteable difference in my tank
