green terror + red terror

Currently Festaes, Salvinis, Mayans and Trimacs don't actually have a proper genus they are assigned to. Rather, they are just called Ex-cichlasoma, ExCichlasoma, or 'Cichlasoma' [insert species here] atm, whilst they await being put into proper genera. If RTs and GTs are kept together with other cichlids, the aggression will be spread around and can well, survive each other.

the festae will most likely be smaller my GT is around 6-7 inches but could be 8 i wasnt able to measure him, anyways the festae will be smaller and if she is less than 4 or 3 most likely will be alone until she gets bigger :( i do have the GTs tank running still empty and the hospital tank with a small filter so those will help me if i need to do an emergency removal, plus the tank they will be is 190 or 180 with a lot of decoration like you said plants, caves, branches and such,

so after reading a lot of different forums added to your great advice, most people have had bad experiences with red terrors and GTs ,,,, being GTs killing other fish :( so does this apply to flower horns and GTs? my brother in law has a flowerhorn and is dying to get the GT that was with mine at the store..... bad? good? ...

Hi!
I also love the ex-Cichlasoma festae and I'm waitting for 5 festea to arrive to my tank.
Can you tell me how to differenciate them from "mayan cichlid" ex-Cichlasoma urophthalmus? I've red that "the species for cichlasoma urophthalmus now was cichlasoma festae before" - is this correct?

Thanks and good luck with your "red terror"! ;)

Hi mate!

Mayan's dorsal spot is more in the middle, whilst the Festae's dorsal spot is higher up. Also, Festae has an intersecting Y-band (which may not be apparent when young), whilst Mayans don't.

Not sure about what "the species for cichlasoma urophthalmus now was cichlasoma festae before" is all about. Maybe it's the Red Terror thing - as the true Red Terror is Festae, not Mayan, it's possible that many people mislabeled Mayans as Red Terrors for the longest time (some still do), and hence when 'Red Terror' turns into Festaes (or more like is once again applied to Festaes), people say that.
