Ohh I see. Will try to experiment around with the lighting then.

It's diet consists of hikari gold and excel with the occasional treats of bloodworms or algae wafers

lack of bearding on bottom jaw and lighter coloration get a MALE vote from me.

I have had a few batches of fry of the last couple years so I can kinda start to tell earlier between male/female (but this is just IME)

Nothing spectacular in the coloration of this guy, but changing the colors in your tank to darker will help. Looks to me like he will most likely stay lighter in color like he is now though.

females tend to stay darker, males show that shimmery silver color a lot more prominent. Scale centers are more visible. There will be more patterns within the finnage as well.

I have a juvenile female at home that stays almost black.

only surefire way to 100% tell is by observing reproductive parts.

But usually by this size it is showing sometimes.

females have an egg tube that is blunt, males have a tiny little sharp looking spike

Thank you, will look to change the tank's background as soon as I can. Hope that will bring out it's colours.
Will definitely try to vent it during the next water change as well. Thanks for your help!
