yeah most males will get a nuchal hump but when they are that little it will really only be visible in the most dominant male if even that, and my female has a small hump as well at only 4in so you really have to take all the characteristics together and see which they have more of, my female even had trailers before my male did because he was a late bloomer so all just depends on fish's develop stage, are you trying to get a good male for single specimen or are you trying to breed? if your trying to get a pair i would go ahead and go out and pick up like 2 more (if your tank is big enough of course) that have the dullest body coloring but the most bearding of their gill plates and add them in, as you will get a much stronger bond between the pair and less chance of one killing the other if they are together from a young age

So I was going to give the fish a couple more months to verify but the last two days I noticed that two of them are hanging out together and swimming in circles around each other alot. They also are shaking very quickly when they get near each other and start biting rocks. Is this a common thing when courting? I'll try and get some vids up tonight of this behavior. One more thing, is it possible for two males to start courting each other, because I still can't tell the difference between the two.

yeah vid would def help, it sounds like courting behavior to me though, and there was one in your tank that did have a lot of bearding, iv heard of 2 females pairing up but never of two males do this so i think it would be unlikely. does one of them have more iridescent body scales than the other and less bearding?

I guess today the smaller one does seem to have a little more sparkle to it than the other one. I also noticed that they both have become extremely violent to the third one and their fins at certain times are turning almost black. As for bearding I dont see much difference.

google? search function on here? all these places will tell you about it, the gist is to take fish out, flip it over and look at its private area will look like Oo for female oo for male, will be kind of hard to see so make sure there is tons of lighting in the room when you do this

Hi I think this is great advice but I just wanted your opinion as I used the venting method as you described. I have a male GT and an unknown GT. I compared the 2 and there is definitely a difference in appearance which leads me to think the unknown must be a female and as you said the females area looks like oO (anus then genital papilla) and the males looks like oo. The female genital papilla looks pink does this sound about right where as the males appears white. thanks again, either way the difference in appearance after a straight comparison leads me to confidently think i have a male and female.

Such lovely gets u have ! So I had a similar Q, I just found a couple GTs in my LFS and they were just 12 bucks each!!! Anyways I bought what I think is the male because the guys at the store didn't know :S he was the healthier one and he's around 6inches but there isn't a bump on his/hers head ? Could this be lack of nutrition? He was veerrrrryyyyy skinny when I got him and is still fatning up, or at this stage should he have a bump if its a male? And no he doesn't have parasites I think the previously owner was just negligent

There is no external difference between male and female at 3 inch. But at that size, they will pair up and the male will assume brighter color, and the female will darken up with two white vertical stripes in the middle. But a dominant female by herself or in a group with other females will brighten up just like a male. I have picked the brightest GT from a group in a LFS and thought it was a male but turned out later to be a female. What happend in a LFS when a batch of GTs was brought in, people picked the largest and brightest fish early leaving smaller females behind. The dominant females in the left over group will assume the bright color that look like male.
