So I just moved him into his new 75 and my wife is complaining the tank looks empty... Kinda have to agree. Obviously I don't want to do any other cichlids in that size tank, but what do y'all recommend otherwise? Kinda like flagtails but I think they get pretty big?

Side note, tank isn't staying bare bottom. I'm treating for an internal parasite and figured it'd be better bare bottom for now.

You don't HAVE to avoid cichlids....Convicts or Jewels will do just fine with him, but I have kept GTs w/ various catfish and bottomfeeders - raphaels, Eclipse, CAE, Plecos, Hoplos, Synodontis, sharks, Asian bumblebee, etc as well as Giant/Zebra danios, Mollys, Platys, Guppys, TBs, - you name it, should be ok. GTs aren't THAT bad, unless you get one the crazy little females I got lol I have seen one big male that was rather dominant and aggressive, but it was likely because my friend had him in too small of a tank w/ too many fish in it

I also have or am keeping GTs w/ JDs, Geophagus, Gymnogeophagus, Amphs, FM, FH, Salvini, Jags, Pikes, and various SA/CA cichlids

I wouldn't do cichlids either because of the tank size.
He's kind of big so you're a little limited. It's just so hard to find adult sized dithers anywhere. My tiger barbs have been holding their own in my convict tank. Maybe give them a try? If you can find decent sized ones.
My experience with green terrors is that they can be really nasty cichlids. But I feel it's more of a coin toss with green terrors than something like a midevil.
I persoanlly would keep my eyes open for a decent sized syno cat and add that and nothing else. But I know you're looking for an active tank so tiger barbs get my votes.

I tried buenos Aires tetras with mine but he killed them. I think if you want to add fish they either have to be tough enough to hold their own or fast enough not to be caught. I think giant danios might be big enough.

Convicts, Jewels, JDs = the NEW Dither fish

that's why Convicts, Jewels, JDs = the NEW Dither fish

:D

I have had good results with hoplo catfish, pimelodus blochii and brochis splendens.
I would avoid other cichlids in a tank that size.
A lot will depend on your individuals temperament.

Jack demspeys a dithers? Come on....

Same for convicts. I've seen a convict take over a 55 gallon. Dithers don't do that.

why not? I almost always have the 3 species in with larger more dominant fish and they are never the tank boss.....they are a great "fill in the gaps" fish. Even if you breed them for feederfish, a few might make it and survive and end up being nice little additions. I know how you feel about tank-crowding but adding a few to fill in the gaps is actually very helpful when it comes to nabbing up the extra food particles, especially if your pellets are a little too big for their mouths, hence why I started calling them "commensals" - but not so much JDs as the other 2.

As far as JDs, you already know I like keeping them in harems of 1M ; 3-6F. A group of them w/ a 15" Amph or Jags or GT or whatever the bosses are, will certainly be a force finding safety in numbers and will also be much more active and less shy. This is one of the main reasons to keep them like this.
