I have 5 juvi green terrors (2-2.5 inch) that I'm growing out in a 55 gallon. I will be keeping the best looking male and returning the other 4 when when the time is right. I want to keep some other fish with him but I'd like some opinions. I've thought of a convict pair, firemouth pair, a dempsey male or possibly pair (might be getting cramped). Give me some other options, I'd like to keep it SA only, but CA is ok too.

GT are very mellow, so you can keep just about any tankmates that are not overly aggressive. I have kept smaller Africans, Thorichthys species and even an angel fish. It's best to raise GT in a group and pick out a pair. A pair can be kept with tankmates as they only display male conspecies aggression at sexual maturity. Here is my GT with angel and other fish.

IME GT's were not mellow. I had a female that took a carpintis to town over who was the boss. They were about 4-5" each in a 75 gallon at the time.

I would say it's pretty safe to say that not all GT are created equal. Some people have GT's that are like puppy dogs and others have ones who are legitimate terrors. Just go ahead with care as is usually said, and be ready to triage at a moments notice.

I have a 6" GT with Datnoids. Most of them are significantly larger and he still tries to fight with them (doesn't end well for him) but he leaves the smaller ones alone.

I like firemouth's a lot, a pair of them might be good. Salvini's are really cool too, but they can be nasty from what I here. I dropped 3 convicts in at the same time as the GT's but I think I'm going to pull them out. I thought it would be neat to watch them raise fry, but I think I'd rather have something else.
