Oh yeah, I have to admit I'm partial to the GT....after all, it was my first cichlid after keeping just smaller fish like tiger barbs and stuff in a inheirited hexagon 30g. After upgrading to a 55 gallon I got the GT. He stayed in that tank for 8 years before I moved im into the 156g. Man was he a showpiece, he grew into a big 10"+ thick mean glass banging monster. They're dorsal fin gets really long and flows majestically when they swim. You'll love him if you get a good one.

considering im not a big fan of catfish, still wondering what other kind of dithers i could put in to make him feel more comfortable? i know barbs are known to be nippers and thats the last thing i want them to do to him..

You should research something south american. Maybe some kind of schooling larger growning tetras or smaller growing silver dollars...like mine, the spotted SD.

Once he grows up, a 55g tank will most likely limit you to just 1 fish.

Anything that's not aggressive, doesn't get to big, and is fast could probably work as a dither. Giant danios, Myleus sp., and Congo tetras would be among my dither choices.

I voted Oscar. You can teach them tricks, and they are always so happy to see you, like water dogs wagging their tails! GT's are the coolest "looking" freshwater fishies.... but I really think they lack personality compared to Oscars.

Went with the GT, and hes already showing me signs of a great personality, stares at me right through the glass haha. Just can't seem to get him to eat the floating pellets.

If you want personality buy a dog. If you want an awesome fish get a GT. Sorry, just had to add another two cents.
