green terror with white stringy poop? help!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I read a great article from an experienced GT keeper who successfully raised many juveniles to glorious adulthood. His claim is that the white poo is bacterial mulm from the digestive tract. After treating for parasites as a precaution, it is advised to avoid foods high in starch like corn, rice, etc. and stick to high quality vegetable foods like HBH that are largely comprised of peas, alfalfa, etc. and only have a trace of grains or none at all if possible. This will not only clean the tract, but discourage bacterial growth.

I had a GT long ago and tried every dewormer I could find, and then resorted to harder meds. No dice. He just shrank and shrank until I gave up and returned him. Now I know what I would have done.

Great advice RD! I have done what you said. They are on a diet of epsom salt drenched NLS. I also added some fish meds that contains Praziquantel and Metronidazole. Hopefully I will see their bellies no longer caved in within a few days.

It's hard to say. There are times that once the parasite takes hold, the fish never recovers 100%. I read that on a discus site, and I'm starting to think it's true. I have a few wilds that have been battling issues for several months now. I go through several rounds of meds, they recover and seem fine, and a week or two later it returns, and they stop eating. They are still in QT, and started eating again as of a few days ago. I don't think I'll be putting them back in the main tank any time soon for fear of it spreading to other fish. This will be the last round of meds I give them. If it returns again, I'll be putting them down :(

Well I guess ill keep you guys posted on how my fish are doing. If this doesn't work I don't know what ill do. 3 midas fish, 2 Texas, and 1 GT have sunken bellies and I would be in a world of hurt if they don't get better.
