well when i got mine on Fathers Day, it was 2in. Now today its 6.5in+. I noticed a huge jump in growth when i gave the diet a little variety. Keep the water clean and they will grow. I noticed his hump is startin to come in and he is gettin some purple to him. At least I think its a he!!!!
See that's what I was talking about. Pretty hard to put a scale to the growth of these guys. Just do your best with w/c, diet, and tank size and as mentioned watch for internal parasites. And shouldn't take to long. Watching them grow is part of the fun anyway.
And as for them being able to hold there own against other fish most are tough as nails, but some are pretty skidish its just a matter of the individual g/t in question.

how would you know what to look for if he had parisites? What would you look for?

look at his poo, if its white/stringy then hes most likely got parasites, treat with jungle parasite clear, if you have a big tank and he is still eating and you dont have a smaller hospital tank to treat him in, then try just doing some thorough wc and treat his food until his poo is normal for a couple days

I will add that for the first 6 to 9 months its fairly decent but then starts to slow down even more.
also, females that spawn will slow down the most drastically of all
