I recently got a baby GT and now that's it's grown a bit and coloured up, I think they're one of the most beautiful cichlids. The electric blue mask, the uniform green/blue scales, and the firey orange dorsal/tail. They have cute faces too. Mine is also very active, very hungry and fierce.

He's grown quicker than all the cichlids I purchased at the time. From 1 inch to almost 3 in about 5 weeks. He killed some of his tankmates already too.

What do you all think of GT's? I don't hear people raving about them much, certainly not as much as guapotes, red terrors etc

I think these fish are nice too, although I don't have one, yet. Post pics of yours.

They are definately a beautiful fish as far as colors they are my favorite. But when it comes to aggression and growth rate they are on the lower side of the scale compared to other aggressive cichlids. They grow really slow, i've had mine for almost a year and he's barely pushing 5.5".....The few that i have owned also got beaten down by smaller JackDempseys and Salvini's....My Salvini damn near ripped the lips off my GT. They lack the teeth and Jaw power that most other aggresive cichlids have. GoodLuck with yours.....

GT's are my favorite.. especially Gold Saums. The colors are awesome. I got mine at about 4" and in about 2 months, he is pusing 6". It does seem to have slowed down in growth so I guess at around this size, their growth spurt stops.

I picked up some sinking soft shrimp pellets for my Bichir. Suckers are the most messy food I have ever used, but my GT and Bichir loves them. Since he started eating them, he stopped eatting Hakari pellets and Spiralina flakes which he used swarm after. I dont mind though because since he started eatting them, his color has really came out even more than usual.

I had a mating pair of gold saums one of my favorite fish as well I was heart broken when my female died from stress after a clutch of eggs I still have pictures of my male chasing people away from his tank in full threat display.:D

I just lost a female the same way. Sucks man.. Sorry for the loss.

sorry to hear of your loss john. :(

Green terrors/Gold saums are definitely beautiful fish. they along with jack dempseys, imo, get overlooked a lot because of how common they are. then again, they are as common as they are for a reason and that is their beautiful colors. Repair has some gorgeous GT's that he should post some pics of. :naughty:

Here are a couple images of my homie! When I first got him, he was pretty skinny and kinda pale. The second pic is about 3 months after.

REC - that's bizarre, I'm not kidding - in around 5 weeks the fish has grown almost 2 inches. Fed hikari food sticks, and chopped cockles and big expensive prawns. Until yesterday he was in a small tank too, 30 g, now he's in a 180. He's really beefed up too, it's almost as thick as my 6 inch JD. In contrast, the 1 inch firemouth and salvini I bought with him, are about 1.5 inches now.

And the red terror I purchased months ago as a baby is only around 3 inches.

Mjime - the GT certainly looks nice and vibrant now.

I'll try and get a pic of mine, I only have very slow film at the moment, I'll see how it comes out.

Jason - I didn't realize GTs were that common. Are they as common as dempseys in America?

In europe they are not common. Put it this way, in England almost every fish store you go to that stocks anything more than community fish has dempseys, and usually texas cichlids too. They are both common. But you almost never see GTs.

I think GTs are better than both dempseys and texans. Though I agree that dempseys are beautiful fish, underrated because they are so common. A decent size male dempsey is quite spectacular, no doubt.

I prefer the variety of patterns and colours on the GT though, and I think they have nicer faces.

BTW it's funny you say that REC, about the aggression and jaw power. My little GT killed a ctenopoma and nicaraguensis, and just the other day half killed a salvini. I rescued the salvini in time and it's in a hospital tank now.

Not only that but I recently tried my festae in the GT's domain, and they fought viciously but the GT got the upper hand mainly because he looked to have more jaw power. The festae's face was far more marked up, with more bruised lips than the GT.

Though to give credit to the RT, he fought back every step of the way when he was freshly plonked into the Gt's tank, and now that the GT is in the Rt's tank he's just being chased around and bitten by the festae, and not fighting back.
