anyone have some experience with thiese things? (I'm sure SOMEONE does) anyway, i have a smallish pair in my tank that seemd to have lost their vibrant coloring, and I cant quite figure out why, my water quality is on point, the only think I havent checked was H2O hardness, my phosphates are high, which I've known, its normal in my tap water... these lil guys have plenty of places to hide and are fed well, I just dont get it :feedback:

are they getting bullied/intimidated by anything else in the tank? have you recently re-arranged the tank decor?

i really havent heard of anything from anyone stating that general water parameters affect their mood and coloration... in addition I kept mine in hard water with pH 8 and they did just fine, had nice dark coloration and all.

I agree with piranha45. The reasons may be multiple (as many as the lack of more factual data about how are they being maintained). The water chemistry is not going to be a factor (if you avoid extremes) with this species (I personally have take this species to the extreme in multiple situations and they are resilient as heck). More probable could be a source of stress within the aquarium, disease or similar. I would say that if their behavior is “normal” just feed’em and change the water often… they’ll get their colors again. Good luck.

anyone happen to know the growth rate of these things? I purchased them a few mnths back along with JD's of the same size, the JD's are considerably larger...

just curious :screwy:

.5" a month seems pretty typical up to perhaps 5". Maybe you have female GTs and male JDs.

it looks liek i have a male and female jack.. possibly two females GT's, but like I've mentioned in other threads I have a red zebra who likes to think it owns the whole tank, expect when the oscar says otherwise... and I think the GT's are taking the antagonizing the hardest, so he (zebra) sadly has to go... wish I coudl hold on to him til the GT's get bigger, than use him as food, the lil bastard

your other cichlids would never eat the zebra, even if they all reached a foot. cichlids generally seem disinclined to eat one another, especially when raised together from a small size.

Always thought they look cool....temperment is a pain with these guys from my experience. I've had pusses but have also had some that would back down a fish twice it's size. Have had females half the size of male kill the male (I was away for five days so I couldn't exactly prevent this). For the most part I say they're pretty friggin docile for the most part when they're being added to a new tank. They seem to man up after a long while and are decently aggressive when a newbie shows up but never freakishly angry.

I'm beginning to think I have two females, they are both darker.. althgouth when I first got them, they wree both gorgeous, one especialy so... i wouldnt thinnk the antagonizing from my zebra would cause them to get darker tho, althought their fins are a lil ratty, and they were getting very scaley :(
