Is it possible for a female to lay eggs that are no good, I guess I'm asking if a sterile female can lay eggs? I always assumed if a female laid eggs, they were good. Is that the case?

Well it seems it is possible even if not common as several on here working with project red texas hybrids have had females do so with known fertile males being used.

Yup(you must have missed my thread lol)... I have at least 2 of them right now. Did some of the eggs turn white a few hours after the spawn?
I had another female in the past that spawned with 2 sibblings and nothing became of the eggs... I assumed she was fertile and the males were sterile because I thought what you thought. Sold the males so I will never know but now I know to check with pure breeds.

Yeah bro, I remember reading about your female. I wasn't sure if you were still testing her or not. Did you test her w/ pure breed?( guess I should go find that thred...lol)
The eggs look fine this morning it's been12 hours at least. Don't see any black dots yet though .but not one is white.

Oh good for you and you should be good then. I knew something was funny with mine after a few hours... Like 10 of them started turning white. Then by day 2 half the spawn was white. The ones I had were paired with green texas's also but produced nothing after 3 attempts. I would let them go again if I had them paired up, but for right now I'm trying to pair him with something else. I might try again here soon because he doesn't seem to like any of my other females.

Eggs are shot...all white.

That's a bummer... Well at least now I know someone else has experienced this. Yours is still quite young and maybe she's worth a few more tries. Both my females were a year old at least before their first spawns with pure males. Do you plan on letting her get a little older and trying again?

That's the plan. I moved her to her own tank and I'm going to grow her out awhile before I try again.

That's cool but after thinking about it... I have a change of heart for my 2 females. I just can't see them eventually reproducing. For example... a pure male failing on a couple spawns could mean he's young or missed his mark but he's pure so one would have to assume he will eventually get it right. On the other hand when a hybrid male is with a pure female and he don't fertilize... I can understand him also being fertile and just missing the mark. I believe this is why some say some hybrids "become" fertile eventually... but I'm not to sure of that.
I have never had a completely failed spawn from a pure pair(not saying it don't happen... Just saying I have never experienced it) but when my carpintis pair spawn back to back the fertility count is lower. So I'm aware breeding back to back can cause a pair to not have a complete spawn like the one they had previously as in not all eggs get fertilized. I guess what I would like to know is what are ALL the factors involving an incomplete spawn from a pure pair?
Now for a female to develop eggs multiple times and not one egg get fertilized by a pure fertile male just doesn't make since. The pure males will produce more often then not so one would have to know that after 3 attempts it is all the HYBRIDS fault. With that being said IMHO if once proven fertile or sterile... They will stay that way. These are just my thoughts... Update me if you ever get any fry from her and I'll have to change these thoughts. Lol

It does happen in both species and hybrids more often then what is talked about and in all life forms not just fish. I had a dog (jack russell) that never took or produced a single pup until she was around five yrs old. Figure six months apart for heat cycles that is around 8 to nine times and bred at least 7 of those times. We sold her to a friend in colorado and first heat five pups and had pups every time they bred her after that. I have friends that breed boas and pythons have both male and females not produce offspring move them to each others places and bam successful batches produced.
I also know of cases with domestic critters in which they were in fact sterile and in the time they had them never fertile.

Well thank you for your input. I guess I'll let them try again. It's a big gamble... Gotta make sure they are worth the time and effort because they can still end up staying sterile. Lol
