Hey I decided I am going to hold off on the tegu and probably get a Green Tree Monitor. I have been doing some research but cannot find an appropriate enclosure size. Would a 5x2x4 enclosure be good for one, if i need to ill make a bigger one. They stay around 18-24 inches and are active.

Bigger is ALWAYS better. and be prepared for a monitor you will barely see (empty cage syndrome) they like to hide and are skittish at best. Beautiful monitors though. Good luck.

Thanks I am trying to decide between a GTM or a Panther Chameleon and the chameleon seems a bit more practical. I still want to do some more research. And good luck with the croc monitors, be careful with them.

I'd go monitors everytime. What exactly are you looking for? you went from tegu to green tree monitors?
lol

-and thank you. I hope i get them soon. Be real nice if all wen to plan and i bred them...

I highly recommend panther chameleons! We've had our first forray into them just this past year, picked one up at NARBC back in Feb 2010. He's been an absolute blast, and EVERYTHING about them is just cool.

Rainbow colors, disjointed eye movement, and of course predatory tongue grabbing is all pretty darn unique.

Panther chameleon care is the most over-stated in difficulty, while green tree monitors IMO are often under-stated in difficulty. The biggest thing for both that can make all the difference in their health is a varied diet.

I'm not a fan of keeping green tree monitors. As beautiful as they are, they're just not as confident and outgoing a species as many other monitor or large lizard species. What kind of tegu are you thinking of holding off on? I'd love a big varnyard giant B&W someday.

I think he mentioned owning a Black n white...

I am looking for a new reptile. I have all snakes and two leos, and I want something new. I was originally was going to get an Argentine Black and White but at the moment do not have enough room for a 8x4 enclosure. I started to look at smaller lizards like monitors and chameleons and i thought that a green tree monitor was absolutly beauttiful! Same for panther chameleon! I want to get one of these but had some questions about GTM housing therefore I made a thread.

A panther chameleon would be much easier to house if you are having space problems. Tree monitors of any type should have a very large vertically oriented cage, I personally would not go any smaller than 6X4X8. They are very active and -as far as i have ever seen- very nervous, flighty animals. Definitely not something you will want to handle to often and it will have to have lots of foliage and hiding places to feel secure.
Although thats not to say they couldn't be tamed down with a lot of determination, I have just never seem them that way.

If you start with a younger to baby sized green tree you'll find them to be just as rewarding as an ackie, having said that a vertical cage 5 ft tall minimum would be needed with a 5 ft length and a 3 ft width, again just minimums here. Check the classifieds on kingsnake and see if you can find a young animal. Good luck!

Thanks I am not sure if I am still going to get one. They sound like a lot of work. I think I am going to get a panther chameleon, they are very interesting animals.
