What is the best way to get this stuff going? I've got a 5 gallon tank with baby brine shrimp Im trying to raise to adulthood and would like to have some green water on hand to feed instead of flour. Also, we've been using our glass cleaning magnet to remove algae from our tanks and have been rinsing the sponge in some water so that the misty green stuff filters into it then dump it into the brine shrimp tank. Is this effective feeding for them or are we just wasting our time? Any other suggestions for adult brine shrimp colonies?

I put 1/4 of a dixie cup full of brine shrimp in my 20g with convict fry. It turned my entire tank green in like 4 hours. It kept doubling and doubling every day until I could only see like 2 inches into the tank. I couldn't take it any more and put a couple drops of algae killer in it. Now I have a tank that looks ridiculously too clean.

I'd say a established sponge filter with lots of air and salt. Thats what got mine going at least. I saw some brine shrimp food at my LFS the other day though.. Didn't even know they made it. Try checking your LFS unless you want to do it the cheap way.

The Brine shrimp turned your water green ? Or was it that the green water the brine shrimp came in turned your tank green? I wanna make my own green water lol.. I suppose the lfs folks would give me a cup full for free if I wanted though.. there's no shrimp in there now as far as I know.

I hatched the shrimp myself, and when I put them in the tank their water was crystal clear. I just dumped them in without rinsing them in a net. I duno..

Weird, green water is to the best of my understanding, a phenomenon caused by massive quantities of micro algae which is what brine shrimp feed on. I wonder how they might have turned your water green. Even the tank full of them isnt green.

I myself have been experimenting with raising brine shrimp. The hatching part is really quite simple. Raising them to adulthood, for me, is proving to be difficult to say the least. But due to my nature i will not stop until I've managed to successfully raise them to adulthood in worthwhile numbers.

I'm posting my efforts in a video diary on you tube. I would be more than grateful for advise.

Have you tried putting your tank in direct sunlight all day? Great way to get "green" water. You are basically looking to do the opposite of what planted tank hobbyists do to avoid algae... So lots of light, a lot of nutrients in the water column, low flow not breaking the surface, warm water, etc.

Also, maybe you could find a tank at a LFS that has some and get a starter culture? Call around, they might think you're a bit odd but who cares?

Im currently culturing some green water on the window sill as we speak. Ive been feeding the hatched brine shrimp on liquid spirulina in the morning and liquid yeast in the evenings. Not sure if im under or over feeding but on about day 3/4 my brine shrimp vastly deminish. I'll try the lfs apporach. Many thanks.
