I had the same problem so I went through all the steps. Water change, filter clean, and cleaning of the sand. The water would be clear for a little bit then as time went on it just got greenner and greener. So after all that it turns out to just be a algae boom cause I had my water tested and the lfs SAID " your water is perfect' .

I fixed the problem with a box of algae tablets by 'Tank buddy" !

Glad you got it figured out. I don't know anything about those algae tabs, but I'm thinking a closer-to-natural approach might be better suited for me.

Can the tree roots push through the tank's silicone seal and cause a leak if I let the tree grow in there? I know willows tear plumbing to shreds...

Interesting..

I have never heard of this, I might have to try it. Did you just cut off a willow branch and stick it in the water? Theres a willow try nearby where I live

Whatever the reasons it's working. Tank has grown hardly any green slime this time around. Still a tad bit, but no carpet. If this willow branch out-competes my plants for nutrients that makes it a better tool than the plants and earns it a permanent place in my tanks. I only have all these yucky, messy aquatic plants to help reduce nitrates. If a willow branch or five can do it better, I'm flushing all this greenery and getting back to fishkeeping!

I just put about six small cuttings in a betta trap in my 55g and a two-foot twig into the pothos filter. This is awesome!

Yeah, you can just rinse them and put them into the tank. You'll want to remove any areas that turn brown and get yucky.
