Hey guys, i have a week old 60 galon which is cycling and the water appears to be turning green? I bought a big piece of drift wood and have quite a few plants in there. What are your thoughts? I have some algaefix here but am reluctant to use anything while it's in initial setup.

A UV unit will clear it up quick.

My tank is 4 weeks into its cycle and i accidently left the lights on overnight ( I hit the switch on the timer unknowingly). They were on for about 40 hours straight. The water was cloudy to begin with (normal cycle) but the pea soup was my fault. I had to algaefix and reduce the lighting to 5 hours, The bloom has improved and just the cloudiness is left. I figure another few weeks for the cloudiness. The fish are all ok and eating feverishly.

Dont use any algae remover crap. Just cut back the lighting schedule. And make sure it's not next to a window. Then if it's still a problem, come back and we can try another solution. (UV is always the best route. but costs money,)

It could be tannins as well leeching from the wood. I never recommend algae chemicals. If its green water (unicellular algae bloom) either a total black out for 4 days will work or you could add micron polishing pads to yoru filter. Another option is uv. If its greenwater, its best to determine why it occured (excess of nutrients in the water column, too much light) as it will return. To me it sounds like its likely tannins. These will be removed from regular water changes or can be removed with the use of chemical media (which would also remove any fertilizers you are adding to your tank for the plants).

before you go for UV - - which is $$$ - - try something simple like Purigen in your filter; I found this was excellent for removing tannins from my water . . .

you can buy 100ml in a pre-sealed bag for about $8, and you can use it in either an HOB or cannister filter . . . has worked very well for me

as an FYI, I also have UV on my tanks, but it won't do anything if your problem is related to tannins . . .

The tannins leeched in my large tanks give teh water a greenish yellow cast. Its not always just brown.

my malaysian gives it a greenish yellow cast. mopani is more gold/brown from my experience
