I thought like you did, but my 90G tank - - planted and with Malaysian driftwood - - had a very slight greenish/yellowish tinge to it, even with a UV running on it . . . no algae issues at all
put in the Purigen, the tinge went away, so I'm pretty comfortable that it was the tannins that caused it
