Greenest Bichir

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You may need to order online and will need $800+ USD and add more $ for the shipping cost as Polypterus bichir bichir "Turkana" is by far the greenish bichir out there. And as far as I know only one person in the Philippines who got them there.

King-L... do you know the Scientific name for Bichir Bichir?? Looking for the Congo Species :)

Polypterus bichir bichir is the scientific name. If followed by a name in quotations (such as "Turkana"), that represents a regional variant of the species.

Gotcha... Thanks

As for the OP, maybe he is looking for the top 5 Greenest Bichirs so he can think of the direction to go??

That was exactly what I was asking for E. Bichir bichir seems too rich for my blood so let's see the top 5 greenest bichirs

Top 10 greenish bichir would be:

Polypterus bichir bichir "Turkana"
Polypterus bichir sp. "Koliba"
Polypterus bichir sp. "Koloton"
Polypterus bichir lapradei "Nigeria"
Polypterus retropinnis
Polypterus palmas polli
Polypterus delhezi
Polypterus ornatipinnis
Polypterus weeksii
Polypterus mokelembembe

I think polypterus palmas polli you can get away with as they are commonly available in the Philippines and cheap too. Just hit Cartimar and you find plenty over there.

I recommend go for a polypterus palmas polli, polypterus delhezi and polypterus ornatipinnis as they are all commonly available in the Philippines and use black sand to bring out more of the green color.

there are some P. bichir bichir from Turkana that are green, especially some of the captive bred juvies that have some of the greenest color. But for a species/variant as a whole, i don't think they're the #1 greenest bichirs since most aren't that green. e.g. mine from Chad is green, but you don't see Chad Pbb makes the list lol

species like sp. Koliba, Nigerian lap, palmas polli or retropinnis are some of the ones that show green color more consistently. of course they each have their own different shades of green. also an overall green hue vs. green dotted patterns over body.

I put the Turkana PBB at #1 as it's the only bichir that I saw with overall green color. I know some are not as it depends on individual. But as far as Koliba, polli and retro goes they still got some yellowish to brownish present on them.
