grouper in a 55?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i love groupers... they are just awesome and theres so many different types... as far as i knew they all get huge.... so i have not been tempted to do salt water for them.... because if i could keep them for their life time a salt water grouper tank would be what i would want.. those black and white patterned groupers are just so neat..

i didnt even know mfk had a sw section! this is more up my alley! the closest you can get to groupers are basslets in a 55. i say that because they closely resemble their larger cousins and have amazing personalities

serranids are true bass/grouper.. the smallest commonly seen being the chalk bass.. there's also the tobbacco and harlequin bass both topping at 6-7''.. the chalk being 3''

All the 10"+ PG's i have seen do nothing but lay around. I'm sure they would be content with a shrimp thrown in their general direction once a day. 55 isn't gonna cut it, maybe a 90.

A good candidate is a US native called the Coney Grouper (Epinephelus fulvus). This species averages 9" in adult length. As with all grouper species, adequate filtration is a must for these messy eaters/heavy waste producers.

try more like a 180 or 200

i never said anyhting klike a bumble bee, panther, or minita just soething small.

ok try this one i believe it is in the grouper class but is really considered a soapfish the six line soapfish http://www.jjphoto.dk/fish_archive/aquarium_salt/grammistes_sexlineatus.htm
this is the same "grouper" i had in my 55 and he loved it but definetly a predator i strongly suggest you dont keep no more than 2 or three more fish together because as his heavy appetite your parameters will suffer if you keep more than that u must feed at least once a day very hardy fish though watch out do not stress him out that much does release a "soap"like toxic foam that will make your other fish sick and hide in some cases die but i never had any problems pretty cheap too got mine 4 like 30 bucks

Panther Grouper needs a very large tank to keep for whole life.

Great tank and fish. you ever go to Country critters or Pet Barn?

I used to go to them when lived there and had my salt it was just a 55 with little fish they lived for years .

Pet Barn when I left NY had made it's marine section tiny but great stock as far as health.
