My freind had one that was supposed to be," full freshwater", but ended up having to put it in saltwater because it was dying in the freshwater. My feeling is that at some point they will have to be put in full saltwater or they will die. A lfs by me has a big one in saltwater and he lets you scratch his belly and he rolls on his side.
I don't know bro, You gotta see mine. His behavior is nothing of that needing Salt ? for now at least.
Hyper, active, alert, eats like a pig. As for eventually requiring salt, perhaps. But till then this guy seems to be fine in pure fresh. To even take it up a notch I removed any trace of Salt in my tank. Normally before I got the grouper I've always added salt to my tank just for preventative measures. It actually helps alot since I have a school of ATF's that is constantly slashing at eachother. It helps the healing process a whole lot quicker. I've just always been a fan of adding a bit of salt in my freshwater tanks. Not enough to make it brackish or even close. Everyone's seen pix's of the fish I keep.
Anyways, when I do my water top offs I would normally add the required salt. A few weeks ago I totally removed 50% of my water. Since then I've done my water top off's on a regular basis without adding any salt.
The grouper behaves and acts the same way. No loss of appetite , continuesly active and alert.
Do I have crush coral in my tank - NO
Do I have salt - NO
Is my tank full fresh - YES
I seriously believe the key is keeping your PH at a stable level. Close to 8.0 preferbly. By doing a semi-auto water change every other day (100+ gallons) helps maintain the stability of my water chemistry, in addition to having a pretty big water volume.
Now, I know people will say.......8.0 ? then you will be limited to the fish's you can keep. I have two TIGS in my tank and they are fine. I've grown one since he was 6" or so and is now 12".
For anyone willing to try a FreshWater BB Grouper, prepare to have to deal w/the unexpected. This is not a for everyone. Believe me, this is my second attempt. The first one I lost on the 2nd day (48hrs). This was like last year sometime. I believe it was during the first shipment.
I wanted to KILL!........lol....... but it was my fault and my mistakes. I made adjustments
and I wanted to try again. To date all is well. It's really something to see a Grouper swimming in your freshwater tank. So knock on wood.
I'm going to make a believer out of you......LOL......
