that looks nice. was building the same thing as what you have, but it was too small for the scale of the tank. Shown on the pic is what ive started with. it's about 25cm area. Took me a few months to hunt for this and is made of 2 pcs to get the 3d look.
As to cost of the big bonsai, i dont track it anymore. we are not allowed also to harvest magroves here (illegal to take any natural products unless you have a special license). the wood piece cost me a few hundreds now as it's mostly shop prices and I have to get pieces (donor driftwoods) that I can see will fit the tree I'm building. Most parts were not even for sale and were just dry display on the shops - had to convince them to sell it to me. I saw the portion I need and the rest are either kept, sold or traded for anubias.
Anubias (nana dwarf variant) is another thing, a stalked with a 3-5 leaves will cost about $10-20each. I have been collecting them for some time as well. most were bought from other hobbyst as shop prices are ridicolous and they don't sell it anyway.
The "frankenstein bonsai" can occupy an area of 2x2x2ft.
