Grow out thread for my bleekeri

Do you guys think I should pick up another polleni? I think my lfs still has quite a few.

Also..I noticed the camera spooks him a little hence why he was in the top corner in the pics. When there isn't a camera it swims around a bit lower in the water column.

As far as the other tankmates: H. cyanoguttatus, 2 festaes, indo dat, buttikoferi. Temporarily there are 3 comets that will be removed very soon.

If those festae happen to pair up, everything will most likely be removed.......

Hmm....I'll keep my eye on that. They are quite young and small right now. Male is 3" and female is about 2.25".

Also of note..when I selected my polleni from the lfs I chose one that wasn't overly aggressive or immediately in the front of the tank. Maybe this individual will end up having a calmer demeanor.

Yes, everything always seems to work when fish are small, but eventually your festae will beat the tar out of the rest of their tank mates. If they pair up, they will eventually kill everything else in the tank, including the buttikoferi, a fish that (if male) will most likely soon be hyper dominating your polleni.

Good luck.

You certainly have an interesting mix. Sometimes it works, then it doesn't. Usually to the detriment of the less aggressive tank mates. I agree with above posts regarding increasing aggression due to age and size of the other species, especially the festae and butti. My paratilapia is a single specimen, only because she's an unidentified type. I don't want to risk hybridization, especially given the conservation status of Madagascar cichlids. She's very shy and is with other non aggressive Malagasies. If its not a single specimen, they're best kept in groups, not just two, with a higher ratio of females to males. I've seen really great pics of them without using a flash.

Nice pollen I read some where that they are usually only aggressive to black fish with white spots. If you had ever planned on trying to spawn them I would go back and grab a few more of them. For sure grab one of the aggressive one as it is most likely a male the more you have the better your odds of a pair. If yours were alone it may darken up sooner but they do fade out easily when younger. Glad to hear your Polleni is doing good R.D.

Thank you! That's what I remember reading somewhere also. :) I don't have any breeding plans either.

Update time.

Sorry for the glare on these pics. Its been too long since my last update. This guy stays black about 95% of the time these days. Slams 5 or 6 massivore pellets at each feeding. I think he/she is doing quite well.
