i use live crickets and frozen bloodworm, main food is tetra prima. he bulked from 1.5" up to 5"+ in 5 months. no feeders at all. dont know if thats fast or not but it seemed quick to me.

I use Earthworms. Get the "Red Worms/ Trout and Pan Fish Worms" from wal-mart or wherever you can find them. They're smaller and easier for the fish to handle compared to Knight crawlers. May have to cut them up first so the fish know they're food. Scared my juvies a little at first 
They'll beef up in no time.
Also have to change water often. I think this matters more than some people think. it will make a BIG difference

NIGHTCRAWLERS i get mine at walmart just rinse them off give the gt 2 or 3 a day plus a hikari brand staple food.

Yeah thats where I was headed too but when I fed mine a crawler (about 8-10 inches) they ran and hid after chomping it once. Those suckers start squirming and spazzing out and my fish were just 3" juvies. Scared the hell outta them
Was pretty funny actually. So I used them for fishing and got the smaller worms. When the fish are small you'll just have to cut them up a little so they can handle them. Once they get a taste they beg for them
