I just bought a jaguar cichlid from a pet store in Yuma Arizona and brought it back with me to San Diego. It was there 6 weeks ago when I was last in Yuma and I had planned on getting it if it was still at the store.when I got there I found that it had a red growth on the top edge of the left pectoral fin, about 1/4 of an inch across. The jag is 11-12 inches long so the lump is relatively small on the fish but his belly is sunken. The fish was in a 75 gallon tank with several other large cichlids and none of them would mess with this guy.He was the boss.

I have had him for 2 days now and have been treating him with salt,82 degree water, jungle labs parasite clear, and jungle labs fungus clear.I plan on replacing 50% of the water every 2 days and re-treating the tank 3 times as mentioned above. The tank is my 10 gallon hospital tank and the water is very green from the tratment.I think that this is some type of fungus, but I am not positive about that.I am posting 2 pics of the jag,one showing his sunken belly and the other pic is blurry but I think it gives you an idea of the growth on his pectoral fin. When I got the fish it had a red line going from the growth to the base of the fin.2 days later the line goes half the length of the fin and is much thinner.I have not gotten him to eat yet but it has only been 2 days since I got him.

Thanks for reading my post and I appreciate any info or advice you can give me

an update.

After 3 days of treatment the growth looks like it is getting better. It has burst open and looks like it is dieing.I have still not gotten him to eat yet but it is still early.Does anyone know how long it will be until I can introduce him into one of my larger tanks without risk of transfering the fungus.Thanks.

Yes the fish looks like it has internal parasites with the sunken belly and all so it is good you are treating him with the jungle med for that, however you may need to opt for a med which is stronger for treating internal parasites. However, internal bacteria can also cause a sunken looking stomache as well which is something you should take into consideration, does the fish have white/stringy looking poop or an inflamed anus at all?
The infection on the fin was most likely a cyst, which is an internal and external bacterial infection. Since it has burst, i would advise medicating the fish with a med like Melafix to help prevent secondary infection from setting into the wound, i would also advise increasing the airation in the tank.
Does the fishes spine look completely straight from above and not bent to one side or anything like that?
What have you tried feeding the fish since you have had it?

I had local bluegills that had white bumps (slightly pink) all aroud the base of all their fins. they didnt act sick but they were loosing weight. after all different kinds of treatments (waterchanges, temp changes, salt, rid ich, antibiotics, etc...) I noticed that the bumps looked like sacks. If yours looks like a syst with something bulging in it, it amy be this small white worm looking thing. I had to net the fish and pick the worms out of their sacks with tweezers, after 2 weeks of picking off worms the fish survived the incident. oh and aloe vera gel/ strees coat/zyme always helps everything. i still have no clue what exactly the parasites were. i called them fin worm thingys.
