I can't find much good information about the growth rate of macs. Are they slow like other serras, or faster like pygos? How long to adult size? Any info is appreciated.

they grow slow like most serras, they get up to about 4 inches or so pretty quick, but then they slow way down. adult size would be reached at about 4-5 inches, which wouldn't take too long, maybe a year or two, but max size could take years... biggest i've ever seen is GG's.

are you gathering info for a future setup?

yep. It's gonna be a while. I think I've blackmailed the wife into allowing me to get a 240. It'll be after we move next summer, but I want to go ahead and get an idea what I'm going to do. I've never kept pygos and I was thinking about doing geryis or macs. Geryis cost an arm and a leg if they're even available in groups, so macs were a second option. I wanted to try and breed macs, but I'm getting more and more interested in pygos. May try my hand at them instead of macs if they grow faster.

I'm also thinking about marine setups, aros, rays, and all that other stuff I've never had the tank volume to keep.

i think you would be happy either way... the macs look awesome when you have a group of them and they fill the tank out nicely without getting huge and requiring tons of food, if you get your macs to breed, you can unload the fry pretty easily and put some money in your pocket.

pygos are just great fish, i needed to take a little break from them so that i can approach my next setup properly... i want to do everything right from the beginning this time and make sure that i have everything exactly the way i want it before i even add fish. i tend to change my mind a lot with stuff and it's much easier to change things when you have one fish as opposed to a tank full of pygos.

I know I definitely don't want a single loner serra this go around. One fish is soooooo boring. Shoals for sure.

maybe maybe.... if there was a 14"+ rhom or mannie around I'd consider it, but I doubt it in a 240.

a planted 240 with a large rhom or manny and a bunch of small schooling fish would look amazing (i have plans for that in the future), but a pygo shoal is a good fit for a 240... you could put a bunch in there with just driftwood and a few plants.

wouldn't the rhom eat the schooling fish?

a large rhom may pick off a few every once in awhile, but it won't spend all of it's time and energy chasing down tiny little fish that would provide almost nothing for it.
