Would it be a stupid idea to put either a JD or (young) managuense into my 55 with a 4" GT? I ask, because I should be able to get a larger tank in a year (maybe two.. . ). Do you guys think the aggression between the two would be bad? If not, how fast do either of these fish grow? I'm not going to do something stupid if I can avoid it, so I was wondering. . .

well maybe for 6 months or so but after those fish hit 6"-8" its gonna be WWIII but all fish are different. personally i say do it and i did my science fair project on cichlid growth rate and i have a GT...i got about 3/4" each month for the GT but i have been told managuense grow about 1" per month...hope i helped.

Those jags did grow quick!

I thought I read somewhere that JD's (and GT's maybe) were kind of slow growers. Any truth to this?

My JDs grew about a inch a month till they got to 6ish inches and then seemed to almost stop.

I was also wondering about the growth rate of JDs because I really like them, but the problem is that I already have a 7 inch tiger oscar in my 90 gal. Dunno if he's gonna get killed or eated...yes i said eated :), if I get one in a few months when I move out my silver aro and my 90 becomes an American Cichlid tank.

Dont do it jags will reach about 12" within a year. Mine grew 6inches in 6 months so about an inch a month and he will do that until hes 12". JD's are a more reasonable choice because they are dead stop growers when they get to that 6 or 7 inch mark. IMO GT's and Paratilapia Bleekeri are the SLOWEST growing cichlids in the world. I had a GT for about 1 year and only grew to 5 inches from 3 inches. My Bleekeri has grown maybe a cm in about 3 months.

How big do Paratilapia Bleekeri get? And are they too aggressive for my tank?

Also, if I should choose to add a JD (mayyyyybe. . . ) would it be a good idea to add a smaller cichlid like a convict as well, just so that the GT doesn't focus on ONE fish only? Or might the JD be okay? It's important that my GT is about 4 1/2" and all my LFS have JD's at about 2-3" tops. . . thank you guys :)

Bleekeri get about 10" Max on the occasion 12". They will get aggressive when the getto a 7 inch mark and some can become nasty but most stay the aggressiveness of a Green Terror. Very very beautiful fish but good luck trying to find one. The only place I seen that ever had them was Jeff Rapps and Uncle Neds Fish Factory ( where I got mine).

I'm reviving this thread here. What would you guys do? Is a year too long a time for a GT and JD to live together in a 55 gallon?
