Hey guys I recently purchased a baby red devil from my LFS. He was with his spawn of about 20-25 devils. He was on the smaller side but I loved his coloration so I chose him. Him being one of the smallest does this mean he will grow slower or not get as big as some that we’re bigger than him at the same age? Also will keep this coloration or change as he grows? Would really love a creamsicle RD.

I believe they are about .5-1 inch per month. Should become more orange and white as it ages.

Welcome to the Amphilophus family

On the topic of picking the smallest, more than likely it will turn out female. Males from 3in really grow faster than females.

That black you see is the actively peeling areas. As fry these guys are silver and black hide me colors. Then they get that blotchy black look before changing to adult colors. Also if they get hurt as adults, the repairs come in as fry color and peels again.

As far as growth rate I can only comment on males growth rate as Casper did not let females live past 4in or so. I got 10in of size in the first year, so just under an inch a month or so.

If it is a female, she should be able to to grow out to 12in, just takes her longer especially if she starts laying eggs. By her 5th spawn Casper had nearly trippled her size.

When I picked him/her out they were all roughly smaller then 3 inches. Do you think it is a female? Your answer was exactly what I was looking for! Thank you and I’m excited to be apart of this family!

So in the picture below, there are three males in a line on the top, and the two girls are on the bottom. 20181006_201100.jpg
They are about the same size as yours is now. You can see here the males are already forming a pronounced forehead vs the females.
Going off the pics I have seen of your fish I will hazard a guess it's female. I maybe wrong, maybe it was low man in the pecking order at the store so didn't develop yet.

When going after a male solo fish most start off with a group of 6 or so. Get them small around the 1.5in mark. Let them grow out and in a few months time you will see for sure the males and have a choice between a couple for your forever fish. Also this growth time helps them get more attached to you as the food source and helps with the "Wet puppy" disposition we want.
All I have to do is raise my arm and Casper stops what he's doing and pays attention to me.20210221_200414.jpg

Mine now is about 1.5 inches. I hope he’s a male but I guess time will tell. I will continue to post progression pics. Here r other pics for reference. What do you think looking at these pics?

A young female that peeled into Goldie Hawn, Caspers wife of 5 different spawns. Look at her body shape, flat forehead slope from dorsal fin to mouth.

Males are thicker in the tail body area and of course the forehead notch. Females are more egg shaped.
