Growth rate

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Food type: NLS Cichlid formula
Feeding schedule: 2-3 times a day
Tank mates: All Ruby Reds
Water change schedule: Every week but sometimes when it smells I am temped to change it.
Tank size: 30 in a 50gal all black bucket and 11 in a 30gal tank

Filtration type and media? The fish will be releasing a growth inhibiting hormone, the more frequent you remove it and the larger the tank the faster they will grow. This can be said for most any fish. Feed as much as you can and do water changes more than you think you should. Do this and your fish will grow very fast. When it comes to the water changes use pre treated water when you can, it should help keep more of your fish alive.

the filter in the tank is a hang on and the one in the bucket is a sponge filter connected with a power head. thanks for the advises.

Does anyone have an estimate with all the components that i just listed? a month maybe or even shorter?

For 1" to 3", I would expect longer than a month. I would say you have at least 3 months for that much growth.

Keep your weekly water change schedule. What % do you change each week?

I would consider mixing up the food offered. NLS is great food, but I would not give it exclusively. I use a flake mix (omega one color max and ocean nutrition veggie) and pellet mix (NLS thera A, omega one color max, Hikari cichlid excel).

I would do from a 25-50% water change but usually a 25%. As of now thats the only food i have but I guess a variety of different pellets would be better.

That is just my opinion. It makes sense to me that a varied diet would help them.

You should check out the breeding section. I bet those guys would have some good info on this.

I just know that my fish seem to grow out faster than the people I know with fish. The main difference is bigger tanks, varied food, and water changes.

25% once a week sounds good to me.

A tank full of Ruby Reds would be pretty sweet!

With proper husbandry, you could possibly see up to an inch a month, but that is solid growth. Not all of them will grow at the same speed. You would probably be looking at 4-5 months for all of them to be at the 3"+ mark.
