  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Step up the water changes a bit. You should see an increase in growth rates.

How long was the fish at the pet store? i see oscars stay in the same tanks at LFS for months on end. That will stunt there growth i went over seas for three months came back home and seen the same red tiger motas babies in a ten gallon. Now i refuse to buy them because i know there grow is stunted. Thats why i ask how long have the fish been in the store because petsmart and walmarts oscars and other cichlids my be in there for months and a ten gallon and that will stunt there growth.

well to be honest, from my experience, stunted doesn't mean **** as far as if they will ever grow.

you can still pick up those oscars, because all fish will BOOM as soon as you put them into a bigger tank. no such thing as "permanently stunted".

i had a stunted arowana from living in a 55 for over 3 years. literally STUNTED, short and stubby. he was about 1.5' and as soon as we adopted him into our pool at my parents house, BOOM in a year he was almost 3 feet cause his water was pristine, he could swim much more freely and he ate very well. he could even jump on his own will like wild arowanas since there is no cover on a pool.. very happy aro. unfortunately died once i graduated... he was murdered by a next door neighbor...:angryfire

First who said anything about permanent stunted growth I never mentioned that at all. Second your example was that of an arowana which is not a cichlid. So I will be sure to leave them Oscars and the others cichlids that been in a ten gallon for months on end at the LFS. I’m not saying that they will not grow if put in a bigger tank but I am saying that they will not reach there full potential. So what you are saying is that you can keep a cichlid ex (Dovii) in ten for three years and then through him in a hundred gallon or more and he will reach his max size. Highly doubt that, I will take my chance on the ones who had been housed properly were they had room to grow from fry.:naughty:

when i had my pair of oscars they grew really fast and the started in a 10 gallon which they out grew fast then a 29 gallon wich they out grew even faster then the 60 then i had to donate them to a lfs since i was moving. I miss the big fellas... Fun to watch

After a year or so you should be looking at an O roughly between 8-12" depending on the Oscars genetics! Thats also depending on water chemistry being good and a well balanced diet. There like any other animal really, how big does a human grow????

Difference between mammals and fish is the fish have indeterminant growth, that means that they grow their enitre lives. Unlike humans and other animals that actuallly go backwards. Chances are your oscar is growing, you just don't notice it. Also, it bugs me when people say their water is prestine. Would you drink your tank water? post your params.
